Guest guest
Heidi, if I remember right, you and your family are from New Hampshire too.., right? In the fall, I will be a senior in college. I am from NH, but go to the University of Kentucky. I'd grown up in NH and wanted to prove to myself and others that I could take care of myself in someplace totally new away from my family. I also wanted to get away from the cold weather. And, duh... horses... lol for anyone that knows me. I am majoring in Animal Science (specializing in equine production/genetics) and minoring in English. I have worked my way up to become the vice president of the dressage team (lol my Dad always jokes that he never saw me as the athlete on a division one team). I work in the genetics lab and pay for my own horse which I bought in the fall. I've found that most everybody is pretty accomidating to my disability. My parents and I talked to the disability resource office and got a handicapped parking campus permit. I've also found that most of the kids at college are more mature than high schoolers. I used to get stared at because of my limp, but now, more people are apt to offer help. I've also gained a lot of respect in the college of Agriculture. As you can imagine, it's a very " physical " college, and we have very few people who are disabled in it. I did have one professor (my intro to animal science prof) who viewed his class as a weeding out class. One day, he told me that he wouldn't slow down for me, so if I needed extra time to copy the notes, I had to stay after class. I just looked him in the eye and told him that I didn't need any extra time. I'd say that I more or less have a normal college experience. Great friends, freedom to study what I want... I love college. In fact, I think after I graduate, I am going to go to grad school to study equine genetics or perhaps English. Liz
