Laurie,

My hammer toes were incrediblly painful, this was back in my teens to my mid

twenties. This was twenty years before being diagnosed with CMT. At the

recommendation of a Canandian doctor I opted to have my baby toes amputated...an

extreme measure, but one I have never regretted.

Recently a doctor here in Florida told me that that operation was barbaric and

that they could have just taken the bone out and left the toe.I know that this

is a strange story, but once again it was a decision I haven't regretted, nobody

notices(except kids!)because of my feet being so wide.( and all and all I am a

vain woman...but the pain was worst.)

Hi ,

Thank you for writing back. I have always had curled little pinkies that always

seems to get in the way. My old shoes when I took them off my toes would all be

scrunched together I had to literally spread them apart with my fingers. Then

after reading many of the messages in here my friend from church and her friends

bought me New Balances which help but I am wondering if they are wide enough.

Everything I try putting my feet in shoes or slippers but little toe gets caught

on the side of the shoe and I yelp cause it hurts.

The pain I have been having in toes are like a burning sensation especially in

my big toe. When it gets squeezed the pain goes all the way through my foot and

sometimes up my leg. The stinging sometimes makes me cry it hurts so bad. My

toes seem to move on their own when I am not wearing socks and shoes, which

hurts even worse. They curl under,

Well I need to put my shoes on and get to work.

Thank you again.

I have had hammertoes for as long as I can remember. I could never bring

myself to go through with the surgery. I found that could orthotics worked best

for me.

Two of my toes are like the letter I but I have no feeling in them, who knows if

his is lucky or not. I see the foot doctor often and will let you know if he has

any new suggestions besides the alternative.
