Dear Dr. Dc Behind the Scenes at EvidenceUpdates Please note: This is the first of five introduction messages you will receive at one-week intervals. Thank you for registering for EvidenceUpdates. This advanced information service supports evidence-based clinical practice. It has several features, including My Profile, My Alerts, Search, Tools, and many others. During the next few weeks, we will send you more details of these features. But first we would like to introduce ourselves and describe the modus operandi of EvidenceUpdates. The BMJ Group (hhttp://group.bmj.com/) and the Health Information Research Unit at McMaster University (http://hiru.mcmaster.ca/) have teamed up to provide EvidenceUpdates, a new service with this goal: to provide clinical practitioners with the best new evidence concerning important advances in health care, tailored to their interests. For a typical " generalist " clinician (in general practice or general internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, psychiatry), aiming to keep up with the most important " need to know " studies and reviews, the 2-step process we use (see figures below) shrinks about 50,000 articles per year in >140 clinical journals to the most important 1 - 2 articles per month, a " noise reduction " of over 99.9%. This process is explicit, reproducible, and evidence-based, and we will provide the details in the next note. Of most importance, the results reveal that it is feasible for practitioners to keep up to date with the advances in health care that are important to their own clinical practice - once EvidenceUpdates has tamed the " noise " of the health care research enterprise! EvidenceUpdates has many features in addition to alerts about important advances in care and we will tell you about them in the coming weeks. Questions? Contact us at evidenceupdates@...
