Guest guest
Hi Agnes, The report actually said it is dangerous when not taken properly. The " scary " part that the story was reporting is that people who don't need it are obtaining it illegally and taking it for a high. So, the report wasn't saying the drug itself is dangerous, it's the criminals trafficking it as a recreational drug and the twits who take it for a high who are involved in making it dangerous. It's basically percocet, percocet being oxycontin (generic name is oxycodone) and tylenol. This is also similar to vicodin which is hydrocodone and tylenol.... Oxyconyin is the name brand for oxycodone without any tylenol (acetaminophen).... They are basically synthetic codeines. Similar in effect to Tylenol 3 or 4. Sure they are addictive, but that does not mean that these drugs are necessarily " scary " . These are powerful pain-killing medicines and with judicious use can be very effective. Since they are opiates and " controlled substances " there is always the possibility of abuse.... j. ------------------------------------ ph A. Guest guest
Voicodin is the pain medication that the doctors assistant was so rude about giving to me.. instead of explaining anything to me he treated me like I was only there for the drugs!!! Apparently I do not respond to it like most people it only gave me two hours of being able to sleep without sever pain.. My husband saw that show also and I decided not to take it anymore since it is so additive.. I do like taking meds to began with but sometimes we have too!!!! The Celebrex works much better and so far there has been no problems with my stomach yea!!!!!!! I have only been on it for four days but I took it a couple of years ago and did not have any problems with it then either.. I do have to take a Darvocet for my back at night at least I have been which is okay, the doctor asked me if I needed anymore.. He gave me plenty... Anyway I think as long you take it as it is prescribe and you are aware of the addiction then you are probably pretty safe... Peace, SherryHi Group,Does anybody use oxycontin? Last night on the news there was a report about it and it is scary. It turns out that it is a synthetic morphine, very addictive and the new "thing" in Hollywood.Hugs,AgnesTo unsubscribe, email: rheumatic-unsubscribeegroups
Guest guest
Gordon and others, Oxycontin is wonderful. It does not stress out the liver like large amounts of Tylenol. It is a Class II drug controlled by the DEA in the USA. The prescription can not have a refill. The doctors are monitored for how much Oxycontin they prescribe. Personnally I have my local doctor prescribe the Oxycontin so it is on her total and not the Rheumy's total since he sees so many people that would need it for pain. I started out on the four hour pain meds and escalated until it was time to try Oxycontin. I was at 2 Lorcet Pluses every 4 hours and it would kick in and wear off. Not a good life having to always carry the painkillers on my person so I wouldn't get stranded without meds. The Oxycointin is a 12 hour time released med designed to be less stressful on the Liver and not have the patient going thru the " kicking in and wearing off " of the 4 hour meds. I did take a week vacation when I first started Oxy at 40mg every 12 hours. I wanted to make sure how my body tolerated it and not be around conveyors and dangerous machinery until I was confidant how I could get around. Oxycontin has been blamed for a few deaths from abusers of the drug, usually bought on the street. It is the hillbilly street drug of choice. Just ask the police up in Jasper Alabama, mining country. The big difference between addiction and taking Oxy for PA is that we are not taking the drug to get a " high " . We are taking the drug to relieve some of the pain. It doesn't get rid of all the pain, just gets us up closer to " normal operating level " . While I tried methotrexate and a variety of anti-inflammatories I continued to take Oxycontin. Since I got on Enbrel I was able to cut down on the pain meds as the Enbrel started to work it's majic. I talked to the doctor and was prescribed 30mg at night and 40 mg for day and continued to work full time with the occassional overtime. What the prescription did was allow me to get 10mg pills so I could adjust how much I needed to take depending on my pain level. With PA you can hurt terribly for a few days and other days the pain is less. PA can cycle thru the year. Depending on how much I do and how the other meds are working and even how much stress I am expossed to along with whether I catch a cold/flu I adjust the dosage. Doing so the 30 day prescription lasted longer and longer. I have finally been able to go an entire month and a half without the Oxycontin but there are now days when it is necessary to take some. That time without by the way was during a " mini-drought " so no weather fronts. Each of us is different but I can say positively that Oxycontin was not addictive for myself. I do have a sister that can't take codeine meds because of allergic reaction so I can understand how different people tolerate meds differently. My advice would be to talk to your doctors. Surf the Internet and read up on the medication. Look at yourself and decide how you want to live. The more I want to get around the more I might need to take. So what quality of life do you want? Take care, PatB pbias@... beardies4@...
Guest guest
Joyce, Following surgery, I was on Oxycontin and it irritated my stomach so much to where I could only eat things like cottage cheese and pudding. So, from there I was switched to Dilaudid, then to Percot, then got off it all. I think somewhere after the Dilaudid, I tried the Fentanyl pain patch, which goes on your skin every 3 days, so no pills at all. But that just irritated my skin. So I am guessing that your stomach is now hyper-sensitive because of the Oxycontin like mine was. I hope you will have medical supervision as you come off it - hard to do, but can be done. ~ Gretchen

Guest guest
I have been taking oxycontin x2 for 9 years along with a pain patch and it is the only drug that appears to help, I have tried, Cymbalta, Neurontin, Lyrica. Has anyone else found this drug helpful? I have a friend that is on a synthetic morphine which helps him, I am allergic to morphine sulphate and went to Oxycontin. Guest guest
Hi, Roxanne, dilaudid is on the list of neuro toxins. Can you try to get off it with the help of your doctor and look into something that is less harmful on the CMT nerves? I know it will be very difficult. I am just thinking that this medication may be doing more harm then good for your over all CMT health.
Guest guest
thanks jenny for the concern but i have been on dilaudid for 15 yrs and if it was so harmfull why would my specialist prescribe it to me????? >
Guest guest
I would want to ask him that as well. Maybe you can educate him with the help of the CMTA's list of neurotoxin medication? They have it listed on their website as well as in a pamphlet. I am sure will have the list of toxic meds in the files as well. In a message dated 6/23/2010 11:13:15 A.M.
