Guest guest
got on the treadmill for 40', 5.5k. No weights yesterday. My workout routine seems to have worked itself out. Weights almost every other day (my body feels like it needs the rest on the day after and sometimes for two days) and treadmill most days. Â Starting to feel A LOT better. Yipeeeeeee........... From: Wayne and Wynn Schneider <mrfreezeagt (DOT) net> Subject: Re: [insideoutweightlos s] Exercise weightloss @groups. com Date: Friday, April 16, 2010, 9:23 PM Oh ! I was so delighted to read your post this morning. This is what is talking about when she discusses " healing in community " . I, too, have been exercising these past few weeks when I don't want to or don't think I even can, because I have made promises to all of you out there. And I am slowly coming out of the " all or nothing " mindset. I am the typical overachiever mentioned in one of 's podcasts who simply does nothing because she doesn't have the time to do a 2 hour workout. I used to work out 2 hours a day at least 5 days a week. When I can't do that I just throw in the towel - what good is a 1/2 hour run or a few sets of weights, I ask myself. Well, it's a heck of a lot better than no run at all and I'm really working on that one. It's difficult for me as I am sure it is for many of us, but knowing someone out there has my best interests in their heart and is silently encouraging me to get up and get going makes an incredible difference. Amazing but true, and I would like to thank everyone of you for your caring and kindness and encouragement. Guest guest
Jantje...I am so jealous that you ran outside. I am hoping that I will be well enough to do it tomorrow. Guest guest
Best for your body to do weights every 2nd or 3rd day. Every day does more harm than good. Your muscle fibres are actually broken down during strength training and need at least a day to recover and heal. This is where the growth occurs and if you don't allow this rest period - not only no growth but increasing damage. If you really want to do weights every day you must be careful not to do the same muscle groups. Take care, Wynn [insideoutweightlos s] Exercise > By the way, after promising to join Wynn in the running challenge, I never > reported back as to how much it helped! > > I first committed to running last Wednesday. Guest guest
E.V. Be very careful of running on pavement. It is very hard on your joints, i.e. knees & hips etc. If you can find a gravel or dirt or even ashphal path, this is so much better for your body. Cement is a definite no no. I know I sound like a nag, but good runners are also a must. You need to take it slowly and build up, so that you are looking forward to it and enjoying it, not feeling it is just another time-consuming chore in your day. Give your body the love and respect it deserves. This is a gift you are giving yourself. Running outside is the optimum, for many reasons, but needs a little care. I really want you to enjoy yourself and I want your body to enjoy itself! Guest guest
Hi Wynn.... Sorry I've given the wrong impression. I run outside all the time. :-) Â And run for about 40-45'. I've just never been interested in how many k's I'm running.... But,I have been down with the flu, stomach viruses and in general I think run down since the beginning of January and then vertigo from 22 Feb so that's why I've been sort of taking it slow.... walking on the treadmill....easing back into the weights. Â And I always insist on the very best running shoes. It's one of the few things I spend so much money on! Â Vertigo is back again today. :-( But managed to get on the treadmill. 4.5 k (30') From: Nixe708 <jantje.gerdes> Subject: [insideoutweightlos s] Re: Exercise weightloss @groups. com Date: Sunday, April 18, 2010, 3:15 AM Great job everybody! Guest guest
Hey E; sounds like you are right on track. Please accept my apologies for proselytizing. Just didn't want you to hurt yourself and have to start back at zero. You are doing so great and are such an inspiration and motivator to me. Managed 7 k before work today but just came back from a lovely dinner (spinach salad & a glass of wine) and I'm afraid I'm not going to get in any more exercise this day. Tomorrow is my day off and I have my exercise class which I really enjoy. Might get a run in as well. Thanks again for your encouragement and have a wonderful run along the beach tomorrow. Guest guest
Hey Wynn.......Sounds to me like you do more than enough! Maybe on some days you could run and some days you could work out with weights?? I think with our busy schedules realistically it's hard to fit in everything and most days it really feels like too much!  Thanks for caring and gving advice with the running. :-) It turned out good. LOVED IT. A friend came along to sort of keep an eye on me because of the slight vertigo still but it just felt sooooo good!  Spinach salad and wine? Yum. Esp when it's with a friend. Hope you're having a great day. evelyn From: lvrocher <lavrocher@...> Subject: Re: Exercise weightloss Date: Monday, April 19, 2010, 8:57 AM  Hello Everyone, I am going to get back on track! Guest guest
Spinach salad and wine? Yum. Esp when it's with a friend.Sounds like heaven.        I wish I had friends. Tonight my husband could not except that I was not hungry made fun of me for twenty min ( I was stunned) . He also could not except that I was tired and wanted to go home at 9pm when his best friend was totally drunk and embarrassing me. He is not there for me at all latly unless I am the " yes hunny " wife, that I was when he meet me at 19. Constance in Mich.  From: lvrocher <lavrocheraol (DOT) com> Subject: [insideoutweightlos s] Re: Exercise weightloss @groups. com Date: Monday, April 19, 2010, 8:57 AM  Hello Everyone, I am going to get back on track! Guest guest
If you suffer from the all or nothing mentality, a GREAT workout website is noexcusesworkouts.com - his site shows the paid for stuff, but the bigtent group on the lower left shows allows you access to his free training and daily reminders. teaches intervals, short weight training sessions.. He teaches consistency and reminds us to throw the all or nothing attitude out the window. He's an amazing motivator that way (and ran his 15th Boston Marathon yesterday).. I find his ideals and IOWL go hand in hand. (and if any of you ever do sign up for a pay product - please let them know I referred because I get points) After getting the free info for about 6 months, I signed up for the internet software. You earn bonus points for working out, weighing in and referrals and you cash 'em in for stuff. I most recently was able to cash in for a heart rate monitor for my husband so he can do the intervals. But again, lots of free info.

Guest guest
I agree...... Scary stuff sometime....... to try change and be a better person. I hope it does not upset anyone that I send really personal posts sometimes. I recognise I am a very sensitive and emotional person. I am trying to unlearn a mountain of negitive and replace it with positive, Not just the food and weight issue but also so really serious life issues. I work very hard at my job and caring for my family and there is not much time left over for friends. I am finding instead of over eatting and eatting when I am truly not hungry that it is easier to just come in here and talk to or try to be posistve for you all. Ps I am not doing so well at the exercise thing but I am trying to be kinds to my self because I do have some serious medical issues. Hugs and positive thoughts Constance in Mich. Guest guest
Help! I am sooo frustrated with myself. Today, I have been at the Masters Swim Practive for the first time in over a month. I was sick, traveling, or stuck working late. All valid reasons, but still, I was not there. And today I really noticed how much I have fallen behind the rest of the group. Embarassing! Luckily, I didn't feel like I was holding people back. This brings back bad memories from PE class back in the days, I guess that's why I am so upset. I have this feeling of hopelessness and my reaction was to just walk away from it, pretending I didn't care. Tonight, I seriously considered leaving the practice and just forget about it- I didn't. I guess that's a start. But I want to work through this somehow. After all, I have signed up for a sprint triathlon in August. If I just dig in my heels I feel like I am just " practicing struggle " not swimming the way it should be. I guess I should just be really good about not missing my swim training sessions, rather sacrifice running or biking if need be, because those are the disciplines I feel more comfortable with. Does anyone have any more advice for me? I will try EFT on this and I have also tried the mindfulness practice suggests for painful feelings. As I said, at this point it has become so emotionally charged because as a kid I did not exercise much, it only came later in my life that I learned to love exercise. And I hated PE class... Guest guest
You know, Jantje, this reminds me of the pattern I had a few years ago, when I was regularly running 10-12K, toying with the idea of a half marathon, worried about why it took me so long.... I'd do really well for about two weeks, and then Something Would Happen. It varied--sometimes it was work, sometimes it was knee trouble, sometimes I'd get sick. And then I'd have about two weeks where I couldn't run--and then when I finally could, I had to start over and work my way back up. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. And then I finally gave up. When I woke up to the fact that I had gained back about half of the 40 pounds I had lost, I realized a few things: 1. I like myself too much to keep treating myself as poorly as I was doing. 2. I enjoy running. I like the feeling of it. I like the runner's high. (And it doesn't take much at all for me to get there... But I don't get the same thing from a brisk walk.) I like the way my thoughts bounce around where I can get at them when I run. (Swimming does this for me, too, but I can't easily get to a pool.) 3. I do NOT enjoy running 10K. Just don't. I don't like the time it takes away from other things, and I don't like the catch-up pattern I had if I missed for a week or so. I decided that 5K is a fantastic distance for me, whether I run the whole thing or do walk/jog intervals. It gives me the benefits I'm looking for--and it heals the inner teenager, who on the one hand used the asthma to get out of gym class- and at the same time hated herself for slowing down her friends. (Oh, yes, can I relate to that aspect, Jantje!) I also decided that I really no longer enjoyed running outside. Convinced dh that just because he loves biking outside doesn't mean I love exercising outside... We got a treadmill, and it's been GREAT. My knees don't hurt. I can get my runner's high. If life really does intervene... I don't feel like I'm starting from scratch every time. Partly because the goal is to do SOMETHING, not to do 12K or nothing. So getting on for 20 minutes is a victory, not a sell-out. I feel like I'm really listening to myself more--I am getting really clear signals as to whether I want to run all out (which for me is still pretty slow! LOL!) or if I want to take it easy. I nearly always get to the end of the run feeling like I did the right thing--which was not the case before. And when the goal is to be outside and enjoy the fantastic view or the spring wildflowers, I go out for a slow walk with the dog, with no guilt about whether I should be going faster or doing an extra lap. OK. How does all this relate to your question? Well... it sounds like you have a certain amount of conflict about the Masters Swim. Are you in it because you really want it--or because you think you *should*? If it's a matter of " should " , what could you do instead? Would it be enough to commit to swimming on your own, instead of being with the group? If it really is what you want--how can you address some of the other issues? Travel is hard to address--but it's probably rare. Work--well, is work a *reason* not to make it practice, or an *excuse*? If you really, really want to make it to practice, can you put your foot down at work, and promise to make up time before and after, but not during practice? I've been lucky with employers who understand that exercise gives them healthier employees who end up working better.... Even being sick.... Sometimes you just get sick. But I'm getting much better at recognizing when I've succumbed to the local germs because I've let myself get overwhelmed and need an excuse to skip some things... I've been much healthier lately. When I feel myself coming down with something, I drop inside (usually as I'm falling asleep), acknowledge the problem, offer myself a solution.... It used to be one of my limiting beliefs that I couldn't say no to things unless I had a really good excuse, like, well, being sick. And sometimes it's not that I want to say no to something--I'm scared that I won't do it well. So if I'm sick, I'll have an excuse not to do well.... I wonder what it is for you. Do you really not want to do this, even though you think you should? Or do you really want to do it, but you're scared? EFT could be effective to address the frustration, but if you don't know the source of the conflict, I wonder if it would be treating the symptoms, not the cause? Since you have the conflict resolution journey, maybe it would help to use that, but focus on the swimming instead of on weight loss? And after all that, can I just say congratulations for going to your class, and getting through it even though you felt like quitting then and there?!?! Yay, Jantje!!! Don't forget to acknowledge this success, even though you're trying to address some problems around it.... ________________________________ From: Nixe708 <jantje.gerdes@...> weightloss Sent: Wed, April 21, 2010 11:58:51 PM Subject: Re: Exercise Help! Thanks for listening! jantje
