Guest guest
Welcome Elaine. Like you I have not been diagnosed with CMT but there is no doubt about it. My mother has it so my sisters and I have been aware of the symptoms for years. My older sister has CMT and I have had symptoms beginning before hers. Like you I had trouble doing much walking and had to take it slow. It would wear me out having to exert so much extra effort and caution in walking. I finally broke down and got AFOs about a year and a half ago. I thought, well that is the end to fun shoes, but when I went to get them the man suggested that I wear both AFOs and regular shoes. I had not thought of that. In my mind it was an either-or decision. I switch off during the week. I love the AFOs for going on walks or when I am going to be doing a lot of walking (like shopping). I also get tired of them holding my foot/ankle in a set position all day - not being able to stretch my feet and having my toes stick up when my legs are crossed. Exercise really helps. I worked with a physical therapist for a while and when I am consistent with them I can tell a difference. It is just hard to be consistent and stay motivated. Now that the sun is out I hope to go for more walks. has the right idea in getting the whole family involved in getting things done around the house. My girls are out on their own now, but they were involved in helping in every area around the house.
