Designing homes for the disabled by Diane Wedner

Physically disabled buyers seeking newly built home that go

beyond " universal design " principles may find the answer in Simplified

Disabled Housing.

The brainchilld of Riverside entrepeneur Lema, these homes offer

buyers a choice of heights, depths and widths of kitchen counters and

cupboards. The plan also provides options for toilet placement and

access to dishwashers and stoves.

Endorses by United People with Disabilities, the plan is most popular

with builders of manufactured homes, Lema said.

He hopes to increase awareness of this concept to on-site builders as

well. " I'm taking the universal design method a step further, Lema said.
