We require smoking cessation for 3-months prior to surgery. When we made this determination some of our surgeons wanted smoking cessation for 6-months but at the time there wasn't any literature to support that time frame (so I'd be interested to know if there is literature out there now as this was about 2.5 years ago.) Our physicians don't always test to confirm smoking cessation, but when they do they most often order a carboxy hemoglobin which involves getting an ABG drawn. There is a urine test that is less expensive, and more convenient, that has been brought up to use, but I cannot recall the name of it right now.Abby Klemme, RD, LD

Our physicians require smoking cessation 6 weeks prior to surgery. Patients are required to do a nicotine test at their preop appointment to verify they have

stopped smoking.
