,

Is the patient getting most of her protein from food sources,or from shakes and

powders and bars? I've seen a few patients after bypass who just don't absorb

the supplements well anymore, and their protein levels go up when they adjust

their intake.

Also, there are other reasons for low pre-albumin (chronic illness,

hyperthyroid, etc)- maybe worth investigating w/ the patient.

Cheers,

Her prealbumin is at an 8 and has been low for the past few months. She reports

she is eating 70 grams of protein per day. Aside from increasing her intake,

does anyone have other suggestions? She asked if her hormones or her thyroid

could cause problems with absorption and I told her that wouldn't have an effect

on the absorption. I am just wondering if there is more we should be looking

at? I am not sure if she is really eating all she is telling me, so it could be

that, but wanted to check to see if there is anything else anyone could offer.
