Guest guest
Hi , I am from SC and I started a parent support group in our area for parents who have a child with DS. We meet monthly. I have speakers several times a year. This month we are having a speaker from Protection and Advocacy come speak on legal issues and IEP's. I have also shown videos for some of the meetings. The group started last January and we had about 21 attend. It was a kickoff with media and newspaper coverage so it got a lot of attention. We had several speakers that night. Overall, we average about six families. Most of those are consistent every month. When we have a topic that can benefit other parents of children with disabilites other than DS then we open the meeting up to them also. I am going to plan two kickoffs next year, one in January and one in October for DS awareness month. This year has really been just trial and error. I wonder if we should just meet every other month or quarterly after reading a prior post. Any suggestions about encouraging parent participation? , please share more about your activities. BTW, there isn't any other families in the support group with twins. I only know of two in the entire state of SC. My pediatrician has been in the business for 18 years and we are the first family that he has run across yet. He said that he sees many patients with DS as well as many that are twins but none who have twin and DS. He has a very large practice too. This list has become my support group for the twins and DS issue and I am so glad that it started. It is a support group at my fingertips 24 hours a day but I would still love to meet another family in person with our situation. Maybe sometime in the future, the list can plan a get together. mom to Landon(DS) and Ashton 16 months <lawless@...> wrote: > I'm wondering whether there are support groups for > parents of children with > Down syndrome in the various areas of list members. > Do they meet regularly? > Do they have features at the meetings such as guest > speakers? Guest guest
Heidi: We have a good support group going in Clayton County, about 45 minutes to 1 hour north of Pike County. I think there may be one going on in , too, which is just north of Pike County. I don't know who the contact person is for that one, but saw something about it on the Spalding County web site, I think. Also, Coweta has a good one, and depending on where in Pike the person is, it may be close to them. hcf67@... 02/09/2005 02:32 PM Please respond to autism To hcf67@... cc Subject Support groups Dear Families: Do you know of any Autism Support groups in or near Pike County? Guest guest
There is a support group at Spalding Regional Outpatient Facility in , next to the hospital. The contact person is Haywood and her email is GAHAYWOOD@.... Our next meeting has not been scheduled yet, or I just did not get the email letting me know when it would be. The last meeting was in January and there was only one other before that in November. So far we have had a lot of parents who are interested. I think we had at least 9 parents at our first meeting. can give you more information about our next meeting when it is scheduled. Tell her that Theresa Christian gave you her email for the autism support group. Guest guest
I'd sure go if we had one in our little backwater commuity. Support groups are a GOOD thing. I'd have to drive to Tacoma, an hour's drive over a major bridge or to Shelton, only 22 miles, but an hour's drive around many curves. Either way, when I don't feel well anyway, it seems like too much effort. I'd like to have one in Bremerton or better - Belfair. Lazy me. Guest guest
I live in a city of over 100,000, srrounded by cities of the same. or more. One would think you could find a Support Group closer. I am beginning to feel like I am the only one with this virus, except for you all.. Not lazy, I haven't even started treatment, but I know I'm sure not going to be able to drive very far..I can't now.. I'm going to take Liz's advice and check with the nearby hospitals, as well as ask my GI.. Sheena SHARON CROSBY <csharonxoxo@...> wrote: I'd sure go if we had one in our little backwater commuity.
