When Is the Best Time to Take Vitamin Supplements?

August 01, 1999 Highbeam Research Archives

If you're not sure what to take when, a few simple tips can maximize

nutrient absorption especially from bone-preserving calcium

supplements. But don't worry too much if you can't follow all the

rules--most experts say you'll still absorb more than you'll lose.

For many people, that's why the best time to take vitamins is simply

the time of day when it's easiest to remember to take them

faithfully.

Multivitamins: Take with a meal and make sure the meal includes at

least a little fat (five grams--about that in a teaspoon of

margarine) to help absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. And

drink some liquid to help the tablets or capsules dissolve.

Vitamin E: Take with a meal or snack with a little fat.

Vitamin C: Take half at breakfast and half at dinner to keep blood

levels high throughout the day.

Calcium: Take 500 mg or less at a time to maximize absorption. Take

calcium carbonate with a meal or snack for best absorption.
