Hi Tom,

You are not alone in the confusion of where CMT starts in your family. I was

just diagnosed with CMT2 but I have no idea where it came from. There is

nobody on my mothers side of the family that has ever had feet, leg or hand

trouble. No signs of CMT on her side. My father passed away when I was 3 but

my

mother doesn't remember him ever complaining of feet pain like mine, but she

says I have always walked just like him. My paternal grandmother and one half

brother that I did meet as a child didn't show any signs of CMT either. I have

other sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles that I have never met so I don't

know if they have this disorder. I recently found a distant cousin on my

fathers side through Ancestry.com and she has heard of only one person in the

family with hammertoes. That's it. We just can't pinpoint where this came

from.

My mother is Native American/German descent and my father was German. I

don't think they've found any nationality that has CMT more than others. I

guess

for me it really doesn't matter, I just have to find a way to live with it

the best I can. Good luck to you.

Elaina/NY
