Hello to all. A little background. My name is . I live in Iowa

with my husband, my two kids, 16 yob and 14yrg, and step-son ,

also 16 (7-9-84). I met my husband when M was 5. As an adult student

in early childhood, I immediately recognized something " odd " about M.

There were social deficiencies and obsessions with his interests. My

family noticed it immediately as well as my friends. He was in the

special education program at school, having been diagnosed with

learning disabilities. I kept speaking with his teachers, but got no

help. My husband seemed to have blinders on and couldn't see it any

more than me treating his son differently than my own. M lives with

us, (mom is a real loser mom). Once in a while she picks him up when

it's convenient for her (also has OCD, undiagnosed until a few years

ago, 6th grade education). I kept checking out books at the library in

search of answers, showed my husband, friends. I think they thought

that I was just an evil step-mom. On the break of divorce, I finally

convinced my husband to get M to a psychiatrist. I was shocked to

hear the result. They thought we just needed family counseling.

Of course, we did! Since I worked at home (child care) I was

dealing with M more hours than Dad. I found a new counseling center,

got help w/marriage and family) They helped me help my husband to see

the problems M was having. What a relief. From reading, I was

thinking more along the lines of aspergers, but they decided OCD and

possibly a " touch " of aspergers. Today, we are on our second dr.

The first one " gave up " and sent us to the Univ. of Iowa hospital.

We've been through many med attempts and have a therapist working with

us now. We have many reassurance issues. The biggest one at the

moment is drinking water. Will it kill me? etc. M is currently on

celexa and risperdal. He takes the ris. at 5 p.m. because it makes

him sleepy, frequently falling asleep at 7 p.m. and is hard to awaken

in the a.m. Thanks for posting and letting us know we're not alone in

this. Wish I would have known about this support group years ago.

Sorry for length~ in Iowa
