Guest guest
Hi and others with questions reg. finger snapping and OCD vs. normal kid habits. Once you've become sensitized to OCD, your radar threshold is very low and you now notice habits that wouldn't have even caught your eye before. This makes it hard. Here are some easy guidelines. Ask yourself or your child the following questions: 1. Is the habit extreme or exaggerated? 2. Is it upsetting or bothersome to the child? 3. Is it getting in the way of doing normal kid things? 4. Is it something he does not want to do, but cannot stop? If the answer to any of the above was yes, I would CONSIDER OCD, but not conclude definitely that it was until it was further examined. PS: If the habit annoys you, that doesn't count, because most kid habits annoy adults If you answered no to all, put your feet up on the couch and have yourself a cup of tea! As we CBT folk would say to Freud, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." Kathy R: Yes, OCD kids can and do have non-OCD kid rituals as well. Whereas some of them may then evolve into OCD rituals because the brain gets stuck on them and the OK signal does not come in, there are many instances when they do not turn into OCD.
