Guest guest
Hey congrats to you! I know exactly what you mean..my son was extremely picky .For years he'd only eat turkey bacon. Our moment of breakthrough was with chicken parmesean! I totally agree..I was reading your post and thinking " visual, visual " and then you nailed it and confirmed my thoughts exactly! My son also goes through his " phases " of food preferences so I can really relate to what you're experiencing! Good luck and keep us posted ! Stacey From: Kat <beedo4me@...> Date: Mon Jul 10 21:24:13 CDT 2006 autism Subject: Picky Eater Success!!! I just had to share this in the hope that it will help somebody else. The story goes...... This past weekend we took our boys to see " Cars. " It was 's first theater experience and we were pleasantly surprised how well he did there (but that's another subject). ANYWAY... I got some popcorn. Before the movie began, I offered some to him. Mind you, we're not a popcorn eating family, so he'd never seen/had it before. I thought, for sure, that he'd go for it (the carb-eating-machine that he is). But he wouldn't touch it, no-sir-ee! I kept trying to coax him, but no go. The lights dimmed, the movie came on. I tried again, nd to my surprise, I had to wrestle the box from the little sucker! Lightbulb moment! If he doesn't like the way it looks, he won't eat it..... Duh! So tonight I tried to feed him a hotdog (without the bun). He used to love them but stopped eating them about 5 or 6 months ago. Go figure! (He eats SO FEW foods that I still try to go back to his old favorites frome time-to-time.) Anyway, i'ts been no-go on the hotdogs. Until tonight, that is. We played peek-a-boo. I would cover his eyes with my hand, say, " Open up for the surprise! " and don't you know he did. Not only THAT, he gobbled down every bit of that hotdog!!!!!! Lesson learned: His eating is a whole HUGE VISUAL thing and maybe I can get him to eat other things this way. NOTE: I thought about waiting to share this until he had eaten other things in this manner, but I decided to not go there.... I decided that I would share it now and let you guys, if you want to, try it. I didn't want to muddy it with any success or failure stories, but, rather, just put it out there. Guest guest
My AS son is a very picky eater and very orally defensive. We have been working with a DAN! doc doing supplements and he has also been receiving cranio sacral work once a week for the past 5 weeks and he is ASKING to try some new foods! the first time he did it i thought it was a fluke but in the last two weeks he has asked to try 4 new foods. For him this is amazing because he would eat the same thing for ever meal all the time and never want to try antything different.
