Thank you and everyone else who's responded with suggestions. The Flikr site sounds excellent but my computer keeps giving me all sorts of security warnings about downloading it, and since I've recently had all sorts of problems with my computer I'm holding off. The 'Hiyah' site is absolutely wonderful, though, and I'd recommend it to everyone, especially if you have younger kids....check this one out.

I did find some stuff thru Google Images that I will be trying today and we'll see how it goes. I'm also taking along my digital camera so hopefully can make my own for future visits - HA - that's if even stays on the table!!

Hiyah is YOUR website? I can't tell you how great I think that is, I've already forwarded it to lots of people and they also think it is wonderful. We live in Illinois, and encounter many people who are not very good at 'sharing' their resources...in fact I'm associated with a group called the Autism Community Connection that puts lots of time into researching resources that we share with families and we also publish it for free in monthly newsletters via our group (autismcc).

We're not specifically behavior-oriented, but as we all know a lot of behaviors can be attributed to our kids not understanding the who what where when how or why of an activity! So these kinds of visuals are SOOOO valuable to a lot of people. Thank you for sharing them.

I am thrilled to share anything I have with other families, if it will enhance their lives. I live in Florida now, but I'm originally from Illinois as well:)

I was wondering if you or anybody in the group has experience with haircuts. Our son Grant (4 1/2 HFA) has complete meltdowns when getting a haircut. We have an appt next week and was hoping for some info in preparation for the visit.

Thanks Dave:) It's funny you should ask about a haircut program. It's on my to-do list. I'll finish up my ABC program in a couple of days, and will start on the haircut program next. It will probably take me about two weeks. I understand the anxiety associated with a haircut. My boys have complete meltdowns getting their haircut too.

giving Josh a hair cut used to be a real wrestling match ..but once he developed enough language to explain his stress we learned he thought we were "breaking" his hair sssoooooo keeping the cut hair out of his line of vision helped ..that and quick hair cuts at first building up to the regular time required...and I do mean quick!! if he can tolerate a couple of seconds with the scissors then stop and reward that heavily..have a real hair cut party!!! do this on a daily basis till he can gradually tolerate more and more time "in the chair"..just remember to make it worth his while..lots of reenforcement..LOL..You might be surprised at how quickly this can work when the fright factor is taken away..let him watch a fav video can help destress the situation as well...good luck and keep us posted

giving Josh a hair cut used to be a real wrestling match ..but once he developed enough language to explain his stress we learned he thought we were "breaking" his hair sssoooooo keeping the cut hair out of his line of vision helped ..that and quick hair cuts at first building up to the regular time required...and I do mean quick!! if he can tolerate a couple of seconds with the scissors then stop and reward that heavily..have a real hair cut party!!! do this on a daily basis till he can gradually tolerate more and more time "in the chair"..just remember to make it worth his while..lots of reenforcement..LOL..You might be surprised at how quickly this can work when the fright factor is taken away..let him watch a fav video can help destress the situation as well...good luck and keep us posted

Hi Sara,

Looking forward to it when you post in regards to the haircut.

It has been a journey with the challenges of the hair cut for us too in

the past, for the past 5 years for me to finally have where my son is

at now is such a relief. He is 18 y/o, but at the age of 12 y/o, I was

determined to find some answers and attack this challenge.

I was not good on cutting his hair at home while he was asleep. I

allowed his hair just to grow out when he was younger, trimmed here and

there while he was asleep, it was no fun.

My son has actually come a long way with the haircut challenging arena

but I know that many would benefit on anything to do it with this issue

when you post something. There was nothing out that would at least

point me towards some strategies, glad that you are for many who walk

in similar shoes and of course to see how much information there is now

with parents/professionals sharing their stories.

In my sons case it had alot to do with sensory issues, what worked for

him were the break down skills (ABA/VB), reinforcement-favorite food

item, as he use to be a very picky eater(desentized with Oral motor

exercises)and actually have his hair cut near when it was time to eat.

I would use a First & Then visual pic of him or haircut place Then

McD's or Pizza & his favorite stimming item of the week or when this

did not work a favorite Disney movie just to hold to give him that

comfort on what he was working for.

I use to brush (Wilbarger Protcol)or use deep pressure joint

compression to desentize him(has a sensory diet implemented during the

day). At the age of 17 y/o visual strategies, schedule, & a modified

social story (heaven forbid Carol Gray reads this), it helped with the

issues of predictibility, it really helped him understand what to

expect, he is still non-verbal but it has been some relief for us. I

also made sure the hair cut facility was not too busy. I have seen

several hair cut facilities who has dealt with similar issues and have

TV/Video with trials to see if at least for the child to remain seated

and occupied while watching and haircut is done. Spraying water on the

hair was a no go, while watching a favorite video, sometimes the sound

of the clippers would not hurt their ears as the child would be already

in their trance world with their favorite movie, if they acted up, the

TV was off, once quiet then the TV would be turned on. This is with

several of my friends with younger kids under the spectrum whom I have

witnessed, still not there for them, but a great start.

It took being a detective and some work but well worth it. Now-a day,

my son walks in, sits down, waits, when his name is called will get up,

remove his glasses hands them to me and off he follows the hairdresser,

in the pass it took forever removing him from the car, then into the

building, then to stay seated, learn to wait, then for when his name

was called, another challenge.

The only thing that bothers him now as he has some OCD is when the hair

falls onto the cape, he still moves when this happens, not as much but

I have to remind him of whatever of his favorite reinforcement of the

moment. Still carries his stimming dangly item. Still unable to

tolerate the hair wash, so I have to make sure we head home for a

shower or bath. Wishing everyone well on finding something to help your

mission on the haircut challenge.
