I feel like I want to meet this man and then spend a few weeks or months hanging out with him, learning from him, and sharing scents with him. Thanks, Anya, for sharing! Guest guest
> > > Hi Everyone: > > > > http://www.sniffapaloozamagazine.com/ [Regarding Dodd article] This is a very interesting article indeed and I'm particularly charmed to see that there's a perfumer researching Joyce's Ulysses for perfume references. Joyce was a great lover of " natural " smells and Ulysses is full of interesting clues in that regard. It's a tough read, but well worth the effort. A favorite passage, in which he speaks of oranges: " Nice to hold, cool waxen fruit, hold in the hand, lift it to the nostrils and smell the perfume. Like that, heavy, sweet, wild perfume. (Source: Episode 4: Calypso. http://www.online-literature.com/james_joyce/ulysses/4/) And of course the famous final lines of the novel: " I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. (Source: Episode 18: Penelope. http://www.online-literature.com/view.php/ulysses/18) By the way, this is my first post after lurking here for a while. Hi, group! He explains the depth of natural perfumes in such a nice way. And I of course love the comparison with vintage wines and the fact that young journalists tend not to appreciate natural perfumes since their noses are 'synthetically' trained and oriented towards awful celebrity smells (and it's so true that these all smell alike and cheap!)... I think he makes it clear in this article that natural perfumes are not for everyone and they are mostly for people who appreciate BEAUTIFUL things and have a sense of luxury so it will always remain a niche market. An interesting man. I should meet him: he is using the same bottles as mine... LOL... Isabelle
