To all members

Essential Oils are basically volatile metabolites of plants, produced by steam

distillation

Every essential oil has an accepted profile- and judged in the market as per

some of the following parameters

1.. active ingredient %

2.. " Note " or the fragrance

3.. colour/color

4.. Chemical tests- GC, OR, RI, Sp. gravity etc.

5.. If it is organically grown and CERTIFIED or not

Now there are hundreds of essential oils in the market, each having its very

specific application in a variety of industries, because each oil has a set of

very specifc aromatic compounds

I would be able to answer your questions more accurately, including the

chemistry of active ingredient [e.g. citral, geraniol, citronellol if some

information is provided on " which particular oils " you seek information on, and

for " what particular application " . You could include the " desired note type " ,

which would further help me give you alternatives for a particular oil also

To give you a few examples

1.. Lemongrass, lemon myrtle, litsea cubeb are ALL CITRAL RICH OILS, yet each

has a different aroma- which is because of the OTHER COMPOUNDS, besides CITRAL,

which are different

2.. Rose Oil, Palmarosa and oil of Geranium- all have GERANIOL. Yet Rose Oil

is VERY EXPENSIVE

3.. All mints [arvensis, piperita] [comman names- cornmint, peppermint,

sprearmint] have a degree of MENTHOL, alongwith other minor compounds, which are

different

4.. An aldehyde active group [e.g. citral] is NOT AS STABLE AS an alcoholic

group [e.g. citronellol], specially in contact with water, so a judicious

choice ought to be made for any given application

Is this a hidden sales pitch?

Sure sounds like it! Thursday is AD day. I think you may have a

mistaken concept of the knowledge of those on this list. You may want

to visit a while.......

Kindly,

Hi Sue

I didn't perceive this as an Ad since no fee is mentioned. It just looked like

an offer to help.

Your second point is valid.  Some of the post was over my head, I guess because

I'm not that sophisticated in the area of chemistry. My sense is that most of

our members aren't either. As natural perfumers, we formulate using the essences

as a whole rather than being concerned about its individual chemical components.

One essence isn't necessarily a good substitute for another simply because they

share a certain amount of a certain chemical component. It's more subjective

than that.

So, stick around Gurpreet and read the posts. Your offer to help is really

appreciated, but may be more focused after you see how natural perfumers go

about their art.

Best wishes!
