Guest guest
Hi Adam, Does your deodorant work? I would just rub in on! However, it seems to me a deodorant should be oil-free, since it comes in contact with your clothes. I use Weleda deodorants which are alcohol based. I've been thinking about using my tinctures to create a substitute for this very expensive product. Perhaps a rosemary sage with some floral note. That would make it an eau de cologne really. I've been using my own alcohol-based deodorants (140-proof organic grape alcohol with distillate water and essences). I found the recipe for the cream in a book. Though the cream recipe is based on oil (organic non-hydrogenated shortening), I have not found it troublesome when it comes to wiping off on clothes, at least no more than a deodorant stick. What I have found is that where the alcohol ones evaporate and become useless rather quickly (within two days), this one stays in top form for quite a while. I used cornstarch and baking powder for deodorant properties, and benzoin, lavender, and jasmine for essences. Smells glorious and it's the right consistency. It does leave your hands feeling oily if you apply it with your fingers, which is why I'd like to think of some sort of applicator to use. And, how much distillate water, what do you think is the final alcohol proof? I used to be a die-hard user of Burt's Bees alcohol spray DO, it really worked well for me but I don't like their company any more, and their prices have shot up, the packaging size has gone down, and their DO smells synthetic to me the last couple of times I sniffed it in a store. I'd love to make my own version, but so far, I think I haven't added anough oil and it's been too weak. Thanks! leavesofjoy / Micah

Hi Adam, What about a round makeup sponge, or for something more natural, a small sea sponge? It would get kind of ganky, but is easy enough to clean. Though I do like the idea of you frosting your armpits with a mini spatula! ;-) ~ W.

Any ideas? > One suggestion is to add beeswax to it to make it stiffer and then put it in a deodorant type tube. I make a powder that I use for deodorant; cornstarch, baking soda, clay, tapioca starch (makes it feel real silky) and add powdered herbs and eos to it. I also have made a stick deodorant for my son that has baking powder, oils and beeswax in it with eos too. I haven't quite got the consistancy right on that one yet, but he likes it. A rough guess as to final proof is 70 (140-proof watered down by half). This needs to be shaken before use. It is quite effective.

I'm trying to avoid the need for any " complicated " apparatus, so I'm trying to avoid making a hard stick sort of thing. I think a sponge applicator is a great idea. Kiehl's apparently sells a deodorant cream, but I've never seen it so I'm not sure what type of product it is.
