Guest guest
Evie asked: Can someone describe 'ambergris' to me? Adam responded: To me, an absolutely essential base note, it smells just like a barn. Andrine adds: After letting my tincture steep for the requisite amount of time, upon opening it and putting a little on a scent strip and sniffing gingerly, I was immediately 5 years old again, in the apartment of the kind little old man who lived upstairs from us. He smoked cigars, and he had lived there for decades, so it had accumulated all sorts of smells. Anyway, I really can't say why, but ambergris smells just like his apartment. Maybe he had a chunk of it there. He had all kinds of odd old things. Now I'm going to have to give it a sniff and see if I can get past my brain's insistence that it's Jim Van Duzer's apartment, to see if I can smell a barn in it too. (BTW, Adam, that apartment was in Portland, off Vista, up in Portland Heights. And the Van Duzer Corridor on Hwy 18 that goes out to the coast at Lincoln City is named after my friend Jim, and his brother. They logged that corridor to enable the road to be built there.) Cheers!
