Hi Folks....

I've been following the alcohol thread with a lot of interest....

SD40 alcohol is a denatured ethanol, and a perfumer's alcohol...

If the chemicals added to it for denaturing SD40 are non-natural, i.e.

synthetic, is a perfume, otherwise made with natural essences, a Natural

Perfume....?

I was yakking with another listmember off list, and the question came

up...

My take on it at first was that the perfume is a synthetic, because of

synthetic denaturants in the alcohol...

And then I reconsidered.....If the aromatics are natural.....

I myself use Everclear 95%, or Ambur 190 (a vodka) when I can find it...

I'm unsure of the Guild's take on this....Guild policy mentions natural

aromatics, and Guild members' use of synthetics is a no-no....

But the SD40 is not a syn per se....It has syns (a small amount) added

to it so our Governments, Federal and State, don't miss their taxes....

I'm wondering what the NP listmembers' take on this is....and also if

there is Guild policy that I missed, that applies in this scenario....

Regards,

Denatured alcohol ie ethyl alcohol that poison has been added so that

it can't be used for drinking. I'm not so sure a natural perfume

customer would want poison in their perfume. The main question about

denatured alcohol is what is it denatured with, and is it dangerous

to use on the skin? I prefer to buy pure nondenatured alcohol, even

though it is heavily taxed. Therefore I am guaranteed that there is

nothing dangerous in it, and my fragrances are truly all natural.

It takes a long time to use up a gallon of alcohol, and in the end

the extra expense is minimal, compared the the expense of natural

perfume materials.

Hi ,

My take on this would be that if there was any synth in it at all, I'd

not consider the perfume made with it to be natural. I mean, what

would be the point? We're going for blends that are made only with

natural ingredients. Why would we put those natural ingredients into

a base that contains synths? Otherwise, we'd not be here at NP, but

on some other group that deals with synths as well as

naturals... (I've not looked but I'm sure there is a group that does

that.)

I guess we could get into splitting hairs and ask how many PPB of

synth in the alcohol would it take to make it not natural. But, in

order to " denature " it, there would have to be a goodly amount of the

denaturing ingredient(s). So we wouldn't be discussing PPB, because

there'd be a darn sight more than that in the alcohol.

My two-(s)cents' worth...

Hi Gar:

Mandy and I have discussed this at length. We require that Guild members

use undenatured alcohol EXCEPT if they live in a country where it is not

legal for them to use it. So far, we have not had that problem. If

anyone joins, and If they do have to use it, they must disclose it on

all materials, from brochures to labels. 100% transparency. It's not

their fault their government is archaic in its laws, and they have a

passion to make natural perfume, and the customer will be informed and

can make the decision. and perhaps join in a petition to change the

laws! (wishing here)

More often, the problem is just obtaining the stuff. the UK laws allow

for herbalists to obtain alcohol, and we're working on getting them to

recognize and issue licenses to perfumers.

AT one point Tony Burfield was behind SD 40 because it was an organic

ester, whatever that is, but I believe he has changed his mind, and

would not allow that in a natural perfume.
