Hi Spela

There is really no good way to avoid diluted,

synthetic, or just plain crappy essences without

subjecting them to lab tests or having developed a

good nose through experience. The odds of you sister

going to Egypt, especially a tourist area like Sharm

El Sheikh, and managing to buy some of those essences

you named and have them be of good quality is a

million to one. I'd hate to see you throw your money

away. We no longer discuss suppliers on this group

except for Natural Perfumers Guild members. You can go

to the website and get a lsit of reputable suppliers

there. It is :

http://www.naturalperfumersguild.com/mlist.htm

There is also some group that specializes in

discussing suppliers of various things, but I'm not on

that one and don't know how to track them down. Does

anyone else on the group know their URL or any

reference to help out Spela? Thanks!

Patty

Hi Spela,

I have been to Egypt, and I can honestly say, I have no idea how you

can tell if it is real or not. None of it smelled real to me, but.......

They have perfumeries all over, and of course they all claim it is

natural. My best guess would be to have an interpreter, unless she

speaks arabic, and just do your research. Sharm is a resort area, so

she should be prepared for higher prices, and oodles of claims.

It is really beautiful though, she will have a wonderful time.

I don't know where Sharm El Sheikh is, and perhaps she's going to additional

places. DO, tell her to pick you up some " spices " while in Egypt,

particularly Saffron threads. I haven't been there since 1994, but ASWAN

was known as the least expensive place to get Saffron, I brought back an

ounce at that time, the American equivalent of about $5.00, no joke.

I also brought back essences, not essential oils, from Cairo perfume houses-

powerful Mimosa.

I'm envious- I had such a wonderful time on the only journey I've made

there.

Hi Spela,

I would say that the only way to know the oil is natural is to actually

buy it from the distillery itself!! I would be even more cautious about

the natural claim of any essential oil in the current economic

uncertainty which seems to be affecting Egypt quite a lot...

I think Patti is right: your money will be better protected if you buy

your oils from reputed suppliers such as those on the Guild.
