Guest guest
Hi , I wasn't as brave as when she quit by going cold turkey. I just couldn't have done that. I live in the UK, so your system may be different. I went to our free local Smoking Cessation drop-in clinic. The nurses there classed me as a heavy smoker (as I smoked 20+ a day and couldn't function without them). They recommended that I use both nicotine patches and nicotine chewing gum. I started by using a 21 mg patch and chewed about 6x4mg pieces of gum a day. During the first 1 to 2 weeks I felt a bit spaced out. I was off work and it was a little bit difficult. Then I slowly cut down on the size of patches and gum. I'm down to no patch and 1 to 3 pieces of 2mg gum a day. I can honestly say it's been fairly easy. I haven't been particularly bad tempered, and only in the last month or so have I had the 'munchies'. If I can help in any way just ask. (3 strength thingies etc)

It just releases small amounts of nicotine in your blood stream so you don't get those cravings as bad. I can totally understand though if you don't feel comfortable trying it. A smoking forum would be a great place to find. Good luck to you. ~**~
Guest guest
I've never smoked probably because both of my parents smoked and I couldn't stand the smell. My mom stopped smoking after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been smoke-FREE for several years. She said quitting smoking was the HARDEST thing she's ever done! I started wearing the patch and chewing lots of gum and sucking on hard candy. I admit, I sucked on so much hard candy that the roof of my mouth got raw. I know the patch hasn't showed to help a lot of people and maybe I was one of the few, but it did work for me. I think quitting smoking is harder then dieting. It takes lots and lots of hard work, but the rewards are incredible. ~**~
