Love Bugs Set To Strike Feb. 14

Security Company Issues Computer Virus Warning

A Southern California-based computer security company issued a warning Friday about two new computer worms that will use love to reel in victims.

Panda Security said within the last 24 hours, they have detected two new viruses, Nuwar.OL and Valentin.E.

The first worm appears as an e-mail with subject lines such as, "I Love You Soo Much," "Inside My Heart," or "You. In My Dreams," the company said.

Once opened, the e-mail looks like a romantic greeting card with a big pink heart. It contains a link to a Web site that downloads the bad code. Once infected, the worm will generate mass e-mails, spreading the virus to the infected user's contacts.

Valentin.E also spreads by e-mail, according to Panda Security. The messages contain subjects like "Searching for true Love" or "True Love" and an attached file called "friends4u." If the file is opened, the worm is instantly downloaded to the user's computer. The code installs as a file with the .scr extension. If run, Valentin.E will display a new desktop background, while making several copies of itself on the computer, the company said.

The worm will then mass e-mail the virus to all the user's contacts.

"Year after year, we see the appearance of several malware strains that use Valentine's Day as bait to attract users," said Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs. "This indicates that cyber-crooks are still reaping the benefits of this technique, and many people still fall into the trap."

To avoid becoming a victim to computer viruses, Panda Security suggests you do not open e-mails that come from unknown sources. They said computer users should never click on links in e-mail messages, even if they come from reliable sources. And never open attached files that come from someone you do not know. And most of all, do not fall for the gimmicky subject lines.

Be sure to have your computer protected with security software capable of detecting both known and new malware strains.
