Guest guest
Holy cow -- I just got ready to cut up some organic vanilla beans that a friend shared with me the other day (from a local organic co-op), and I figured I'd just take a gander at the ones that I've had sealed tightly in a jar since 1997 or 1998 (I had a whole crate of stuff that I got back then and sort of 'forgot' about - including sandalwood that I wrote about a while back). Anyway, I never paid any mind to these beans in the jar after I started opening up the stuff in the crate because I figured they would be shot - like maybe they got old and dried up and somehow lost their scent. (But then, where would it go, when they're sealed in a jar?) Was I ever wrong! I pulled them out and the first thing I noticed (well, after the heavenly smell) was how incredibly plump they are. They're seriously fat! Like twice as plump as any I've seen lately. The next thing I noticed was the size. They're nearly 8 " long. All of the ones I've been working with recently (both Tahitian and planifolia) are 5 " to 6.5 " long, including the ones I just got. Hmmm... Does anyone have any input on the size of vanilla beans these days? I'm wondering if there's more demand for them now, so they're not getting to grow as large... Or? Maybe there's some sort of atmospheric change affecting them so they're smaller... Or? What? Cheers (vanilla-scented ones!), Andrine
