Guest guest
Udo's is flax seed and that is one type of essential fatty oils which is very good for the body. There are also other oils such as fish oil, evening primrose oil, and a handful of others that some people may also take (I do) but it is just a personal choice. It is not connected to BFL that I take the additional oils, it is just a prefence for health reasons. Supplementing with Udo's is a good way to get EFA's in and the health benefits are great...for BFL, it is just a recommended supplement and not set in stone. Alot of members find that alot of health benefits from using the flaxseed oil on a regular basis and it is a very good supplement for your body. > > Even after reading the posts on EFA's and supplements, I'm still a > little confused. Guest guest
I only take flaxseed oil.....as it contains Omega's 3,6 AND 9. Fish oil contains only Omega 3, so to take both, for myself, I don't feel is necessary. One less thing for me to have to remember to take. LOL! Guest guest
> I only take flaxseed oil...as it contains Omega's 3,6 AND 9. > Fish oil contains only Omega 3, so to take both, Eh.. wait a minute .. Plain old flaxseed oil is ONLY omega 3 fatty acids (the one the majority of people are lacking btw). One the other hand, the name brand of UDO's (as the whole name says) is BLEND of oils: http://www23.netrition.com/udos_choice_page.html " Natural, unrefined Udo's Choice contains an ideal balance of the essential fatty acids (EFAs) omega 3 (alpha-linolenic) and omega 6 (linoleic). These EFAs are so called because they are essential to life itself. They cannot be created by the body and must be obtained through diet. Refined, hydrogenated oils turn EFAs into harmful trans-fatty acids, and studies show most contemporary Western diets are lacking in omega 3. To compensate for this, many consumers have turned to unrefined flax oil, high in omega 3. But, having the right balance between omega 3 and omega 6 is equally important. Too much of one will cause a deficiency of the other. Over the long term flax oil alone can lead to a shortage of omega 6. Udo's Choice Ultimate Oil Blend Ingredients: *Flax oil*, sunflower oil, sesame oil, medium chain triglycerides, evening primrose oil (12.6 mg GLA per tablespoon), rice germ and bran oil, soy lecithin, d-alpha tocopheral (natural vitamin E), oat germ and bran oil. (*from certified organically grown seeds). " AND the omega 3's in fish oils ARE NOT the same - they are called DHA and EPA's and altho are dietary fats, are NOT considered the same as *essential* fatty acids: " Besides alpha linolenic acid, there are *other* omega-3 fatty acids that are very beneficial to your health. Cold water fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, and trout are good sources of eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are needed by human organs - especially useful to the brain. Although your body can manufacture these oils *from the essential fatty acids*, sometimes the conversion process does not work optimally, so it is beneficial to supplement your diet with these oils directly. " Note the categories here: http://www23.netrition.com/oils_page.html So bottom line many people choose to just supplement with flaxseed oil (the basic lack of omega 3's), others like UDO's completeness and balance (ratios of 3/6/9's), and everyone should eat salmon(or other cold water fish) a couple of times a week OR take fish oil supplements as an addition to the basics. This is a good FAQ at the Udo Erasmus site - read the question about fish oils too: http://www.udoerasmus.com/FAQ.htm joni ------------------------------------------------ *Lift well, Eat less, Walk fast, Live long*
Guest guest
It actually has all three (I'm an herbalist, and am almost finished with a degree in Natural Health....this is one of the few areas I'm pretty well versed in). The PRIMARY Omega in Flaxseed oil IS indeed 3, but is has 6 AND 9 in it. And as the average diet is already has a good amount of 6, but not enough of 3 and 9, Flax is a good suplement, because it helps balance the ratios out. Guest guest
I went and looked it up, and for anyone who is interested, here is the breakdown of the Omegas in Flaxseed Oil: At 45-60% Omega 3(it contains nearly twice as much Omega-3 as fish oils.) Approximately 13-20% Omega-6 And 14-20% Omega-9 Since our bodies need Omega 3 the most out of the 3 (as many of our diets already contain a decent amount of Omega 6, and Omega nine is needed in lesser quanitities), Flaxseed is a great supplement. I've been taking it for about 7 years now.
