I have noticed that i get a much better pump on the calf raise machine if i am

NOT wearing

shoes. Does this harm my calves at all? When i wear shoes they seem to slip off

the steps

and i can't lift as much weight-nor do i get the same burn afterwards.

Yes, I have a re-occuring injury similar to the way yours sounds. I suggest

you reduce your weight until you can lift

in a very controlled manner (IE not straining on the last reps... where you

might twist funny.. and reinjure the same

ligament, tendon, or cerviocal disc). In my case the injury is two of the

cervical disc's (neck). And I get the knife

blade in the back spasm because of a pinched nerve way higher up in my neck.

If your injury is something different,

I still think reducing weight is the thing to do, because I believe that kind

of weight lifting helps heal. Gradually

add on weight (my shoulder blades, and left shoulder took ***MONTHS* of this

kind of babying... before I could add weights...

and it felt pitiful at the time... but I felt this was the only way to work

thru it).

It shouldn't harm your calves any, but might I recommend wrestling

shoes? They're grippier than bare feet, they're less puncturable, and

they're pretty darn good for deadlifting and squatting because of the

perfectly flat sole.

Agree with here. I highly recommend wrestling shoes for calf training

(and other exercises). Much personal success as well as with

clients/athletes.

I can't comment on wrestling shoes but I use 'surf runners' - I think they are

designed for surfers/wind surfers.

I wouldn't use them for squats as they provide no ankle support but they are

good for deadlift - thin with excellent grip.
