Happy 4th of July to those of you in the U.S. I want

to thank all of you who have so kindly given your

thoughts as to possible reasons for, and possible

solutions for my sons difficulties falling alseep. As

those of you who have been around for a while may

remember, Tommy has severe AD/HD along with OCD. I

noticed the change in his ability to fall asleep after

we started Concerta,(the 12 hour form of Ritalin) last

September. This med has worked wonderfully for him

and in many areas of his life he is able to approach

normal behavior and is improving all the time

(especially socially). It was not an option to remove

Concerta or use something else (all the others had

already been used with not much success!!!) Last week

Tommy attended Vacation Bible school in the evening.

He was also attending Extended School year in the

morning which meant that the Concerta would wear off

in the middle of Bible school. His psychiatrist had

given me a prescription for the shorter acting Ritalin

to use on just these occassions when Tommy would need

to be out later than his meds would be working. Lo

and behold....not only did the small dose of Ritalin

help him to control his behavior and attend in

class...he also had much less trouble falling

asleep!!!!! I emailed the p-doc and he said that this

is not an unusual situation - the trouble falling

asleep is more related to settling down than it is to

insomnia and very often kids who have AD/HD are helped

to settle by a small does of their stimulant. We are

currently trying this approach to see if it helps in

the long term. I find this rather intriguing. Have a

good day! in Southeastern PA

Hi , it's intriguing to me too. When I read your original post I was

sure in my own mind that the stimulant ADHD med was probably causing the

problem. But it makes sense in a way that a bit more of it, to settle and

focus him, would make it easier for him to drift off to sleep.

I hope your son has continued success with this method. Sleep problems are

so distressing to our kids (and us too of course! LOL)
