Others may disagree, but I have always thought of the EFL book as a

continuation for people to live the BFL lifestyle AFTER they have

gotten to where perhaps they want to be or near there to add in some

of that variety they might feel they are lacking at that point. You

know, to show that you really can make it a true lifestyle change

without having to sacrifice good tasting food forever (as some

people might think of BFL with a 'dieting' mentality).

I think that if people want to use the recipes in the book in a

firsttime 12 week challenge, they need to really watch portion sizes

and maybe use them sparingly at first, relying more on the basics in

the BFL book than eating entirely from the EFL book.

This is one of those things where you have to ask yourself, do I want

great (possibly temporary) results fast, or do I want a permanent

lifestyle change that's more flexible/enjoyable but may take a little

longer?

The answer to that question is different for everybody, and a lot of

people fall somewhere in between. If you're in a big hurry to get

ripped, living on chicken and broccoli and yams is the way to go. But

if you're going for lasting changes, you can get the same results with

EFL, it just may take slightly longer. :-)

The kicker is your calorie deficit. Someone who's eating straight out

of the EFL book but watching portions and kicking ass in the gym will

get better results than someone who's sticking strictly to the

authorized foods list but fudging their portions and blowing it on

free day. And often the more rigid you are during the week, the more

likely you are to go berserko on your free day or to quit altogether.

Only you can evaluate your personality, goals, and discipline and make

the call as to which approach is better. They both have merit. It just

depends on your preference.

Isn't the EFL book just a matter of someone mixing the authorized food

into good tasting dishes? I don't see why you couldn't use the

recipes and still get great results. I suppose it may be a matter of

how fast you want to see results. I know I wouldn't last a week

eating plain baked/boiled chicken breast and brown rice. Hubs cooks

almost exclusively from the EFL book. We love it.

Hey -- I'm an upper midwest gal and we use the charcoal grill all

year. Just keep a shovel by the patio door and a broom to knock off

the snow. Amazing how good something simple on the grill tastes when

it's -10F! Also I use the good advice all over the BFL sites of

putting IQF chicken breasts in the oven for about an hour at 350 and

keeping them in the fridge. We slice off a portion for salads, wraps,

or just chicken. I'm getting more creative with the seasoning

blends. Cajun, blackening, taco/fajita, some of the McCormick blends,

just salt & pepper, or whatever you see that sounds good usually is!

I ate exclusively from the Eating for Life book my first 3 challenges and

I had very good results. You can see under photos Michele T. I even got

a letter and pin saying I was a finalist for the first round but didn't

win anything. My personal opinion is do what works for you I would NEVER

have stayed with this program eating off the authorized list in the book.

I mean my hubby would have flipped a lid then I would have had to cook 2

meals and I wasn't going to do that.

That is so true about the portion sizes in EFL. I have the book but

don't cook much from it for that reason. Too much food will just be a

temptation to eat more than I should. I like the taco pasta dish but

have to make a smaller portion than the recipe calls for. I'm even

scared to use EFL too much for maintenance simply because maintenance

is every bit as challenging as the " challenge " itself.

I cook from EFL but measure out my portions and feed the rest to the family.

The meatloaf and sloppy joe recipes are the family's favorites. I've started

week five and so far I have lost 12 lbs on the scale and 2.5 inches off my

hips. I lost inches other places but nothing as significant as my hips!

I've been using EFL from day 1 but only for my dinners. My family and I

have loved all the recipes. It's worked for me for 14 months of BFL.
