Guest guest
Hey Judy, if you have an actual diagnosis given by a professional and he's having problems at school because of OCD and any other diagnosis, then the school HAS to at least give him a 504! If they don't seem motivated, call the person at the administrative office that's over the 504 program. Just say " My son is diagnosed with.... and it's affecting his success in school. My problem is that I have ADD real bad, and the energy required for an appeal just doesn't seem to be with me right now. I get so tired of fighting for everything. But if I have to, I will do it. Right now I have met with half his teachers, and they are being reasonable (if suspicious). I will see how the remainder of the teachers are. > > Judy > Re: Re: medication and homework > > > Judy: > > Repeal!!! Guest guest
Dear Judy, Have you had his psychiatrist or therapist contact the school? My daughter's therapist called her teacher last year to just impress upon her that this was real and that somewhere down the road we might need to make some accomodations. Luckily we didn't need to, but her phone call certainly made a difference in the teacher's attitude. As I wrote yesterday I realized that it was probably the word "impacting" that caused the problems. You have to wait until he is failing to get help? Where's the sense in that? Sometimes the school system just loses sight of what the point is.

Talk about short sighted. They let me know at the 504 hearing that they REALLY get steamed when a parent brings a mental health professional or advocate with them. Isn't that the limit? They brought the "school psychologist" with them, however. Now Dan had been in this school for an entire year. Before I enrolled him, I had a meeting with his guidance counsellor, laying out his OCD and ADD disabilities. I kept in close touch with the guidance counsellor all year. And YET--the "school psychologist" had never ever met Dan!!! Not even after I applied for a 504 plan. Aren't they wonderful? Whose welfare are they looking out for? Judy That bites! Guest guest
He scored 1130 on the SAT when he was in 7th grade. He is in the top tenth of the top percent in both math and language. This does not phase them. His 8th grade guidance counsellor actually told me, "Oh, that's not unusual." I guess the guidance counsellor flunked probability and statistics. Guest guest
Virginia--so near, and yet so far from land. It is truly pathetic here, isn't it? I know it is hard to believe, but they have really circled their wagons on this issue. Judy Re: IEP/504 is just an 'average' kid academically (thank god)!! However, he IS very bright like most people who have disorders (I've never met ONE yet that isn't exceptionally gifted in some area)! But, here in Virginia, Judy-- I was approached by the school (when was in the first grade) to do an IEP on him. His *behavior* was the tell-tale sign that something was going on with him. They didn't know WHAT it was at the time, and quite frankly, I didn't want to HEAR it!! But, I finally came out of my own denial and accepted the truth. After the IEP was performed, I took him to a psychiatrist to find out what 'it' was.10 years ago, I was approached by the school too-- for (now 18)- for a child study/IEP. I can't BELIEVE that land, one state above me, is being so difficult!! Granted, Dan is academically gifted- and therefore can 'look' like the Model Student. But, a TRAINED and OBSERVANT eye can pick up on BEHAVIOR. Unless, of course, Dan isn't showing ANY of his symptoms in school- which can be the case many times. The ONLY 'fighting' I've EVER done with the school systems here was fighting against all this 'assistance' they wanted to give to my sons. They've offered more HELP than I thought they needed!! Joni
