All kids on IEPs/504s have an MFE (multifactored evaluation) done every three

years (at least). They should be completed by several different folks -- school

psychologist, speech/language, school nurse (hearing and vision), phys ed (or OT

if they have disabilities in that area), etc. You can submit any outside

testing that you have had done, though the schools aren't required to use that

information. The biggest problem in qualifying for SLD (specific learning

disability) is that the child must have a 2 standard deviation difference

between achievement and ability. This makes it really hard for the kids that

struggle, but don't meet this stupid numeric requirement. However, they can

qualify for special ed under OHI if the OCD significantly impacts their ability

to learn -- and which of our kids isn't impacted significantly in school? This

doesn't just mean in terms of disruptive behavior. It can be things like

reduced ability to pay attention, excessive absence, etc.

Make sure you check out www.wrightslaw.com for all kinds of helpful information.

And go to your meeting prepared. If you do not agree with the results of the

school's MFE, you can request an independent outside evaluation. It is a

lengthy process to get the school to pay for it. You can have it done yourself,

but it is VERY expensive and will not necessarily be covered by insurance, and

the school can choose to ignore the info if you go ahead on your own.

Thanks for the response. The evaluations he will be going through are with

all of the professionals you mentioned. I will check out " wrightslaw " and

look through my state law as well. The self-contained special education

room has been a God send for him and our whole family. He's learning in a

way he can understand, which is increasing his self-esteem (what a great

thing to have). I'm hoping that the discrepancy of his reading capabilities

will help (he reads at 2nd grade level in 4th grade -- it's sad that his 2nd

grade brother is reading at a higher level than him; but Austin doesn't make

fun of him and when asked about a work he politely tells what it is.

It's very touching to watch.).

Thanks for the advice and I'll be ready with all my guns on at the MDT

meeting.
