Hello, I have Systemic Lupus with RA as a complication (along with several

other wonderful (?) things). I haven't heard of photosensitivity due to the

RA, but I will surely ask my doctor the next time I see him. I am seriously

photosensitive due to the Lupus. It actually started when I was taking oral

Prednisone several years ago for the inflamation and didn't quit when I

weaned off the Prednisone. Now if I even get in the car and get very much

sun through the glass, I break out in welts on my arms and my face (very

itchy and doesn't look very nice either). Also, it doesn't help that I live

in South Texas with LOTS of sunshine! Alice Elmendorf, Texas

Yes, photosensitivity can be seen in some lupus patients due to their

disease, but it is not thought to be a symptom of rheumatoid arthritis;

however, it certainly can occur in some RA patients because of the

medications used to treat RA.

Yes, living here in AZ I found yrs ago the hard way about drugs not mixing

well with being in the sun......even if it isnt above 80 degrees.....and a

dry heat...if sun is out here I now stay out of it..Yrs ago I was taking a

class (some Soc WK class) and we were doing this exercise outside walking in

a row hand on one in front's shoulder ..it was Nov and sun was out .....I

lasted all of about 5 minutes , then get nauseous and feel like you are

going to pass out......lovely.....I used to bake in the sun in the good old

days.....now I am so pale white .........I bought some sunlees tanning spray

this yr and may try that .........Judy in AZ

The photosensitivity was my first symptom bedore I began any meds. My

rheumatologist said I didn't have Lupus and now I think he just won't

admit he could be wrong. It took him 2 months to finally decide that

I did have RA. Thank you to all that responded. ~Christi

Hi ,

I have to agree with you. I have this problem but mine is cause from the

predisone and metho., I take. Last week with the warm weather I forgot and

got a nasty burn just from driving in my car. I had to cover up with an

extra sweater I had in the car. My sitting in the sun days are over.

I had to go down to my primary because of stomach pains. He was worried

it was the pancreas but it is a stomach virus. Guess in my case I should

call it a pouch virus. He did tell me he is concerned because of the

bacteria in the pouch. He doesn't like the idea of waiting two months to

start the anti-biotics. But he did say that the medicine can make you sick

to your stomach, so that maybe why she is waiting. Anyway, he gave me

campazine for the nausea, so maybe that will help.

Hi...way back when my diagnosis was sero-negative lupus/mixed connective

tissue disease, some of my first symptoms were a rash across my face

from the sun, and terrible stomach cramping and diarrhea if I was in the

sun/heat more than just a few minutes.

Now that my diagnosis are RA, PA & fibromyalgia, I still have those

symptoms. But they did start before I was on any medications at all.

Love...

Tess
