Guest guest
thanks, i never even thought of that. i understand they need guidelines and limitations. i did go to the township food pantry. the man looked right at my round belly. (like you can't survive on that for awhile??) that's what it felt like anyway. for some canned goods and ramen noodles?? i feel bad enough as it is. kathy in il
Guest guest
Kathy - I'm sorry about all of the aggravation and red tape. It sounds like they are being ridiculous. Also, I find it odd that he wouldn't even refer you to food banks. I know our church runs a food bank and I'm sure they're less rigid and ridiculous. They are simply set up to help anyone who needs it - no credit checks required. You may want to consider bringing your case to your local councilperson or assemblyman, they may be able to cut through some of that red tape. I used to work for a state assemblyman in NY and we dealt with cases like this all the time. Guest guest
i was talking to one of my neighbors and he has a friend who's mom is the supervisor over there. he said he would talk to her to see if she could help us in any way. also someone from work gave me another agency name in the area that handles fema $. i don't really know what that would do for me, but it is worth a phone call to ask. also i think sometime next week i will be walking into catholic charities. we have been playing phone tag for 3 weeks now. i did get my fidelity check so at least i have this to tie me over. Guest guest
Kathy, I have wanted to go back to work to but if I can't work full time I don't get insurance and if I work part-time I lose my medicade. I know I can't be on my feet that long. I went back to work in a dr.'s office 4hrs a day for two days a week, that was perfect, gave me extra money and broke the boredom but it took medicade a week to find out then it all started to cave in so I quit. now I spend my time in front of the computer and visiting my nephew in the hospital and Keep my sis company. I just gave up the idea of work. Judy in Indy
Guest guest
Kathy, In most states there is the Salvation Army and community action agencies. They usually have food shelves as well as clothing shelves. State Aid are suppose to help people but they give everyone the run around. When I lived in FL I had to get state aid. They have lots of rules but I did qualify. I had to be in complanice with there rules though. I had to be working or going to school. I chose to get my GED. I passed it with one of the highest scores in the state of FL. After that I enrolled in college prep classes. I was able to get a Pell Grant of $1500.00 per semster. I know that the money and the food stamps does not strecth the whole month. Lots of churches have food banks and they usually are very wonderful people. I know the look that people give when you go for help. I look at it this way, I am not in this postion because I chose to be there. I have a child that is very ill and I can't work because of it. I have to look at my family and myself and do what I need to do. Also, I look at that fact that I worked from 16 yrs old. I paid my SS and taxes, so I am entitled to get help. Its not that you don't want to work but you can't work. I get very angry with these people that abuse the system. Those people make it hard for people like you and me to get the help we need. just told me to tell you hello and be strong. You and your son are in our thoughts and prayers. and

Guest guest
Dear Kathy...I've had to ask fo assistance with food, too. It is difficult, and thankfully most are gracious in giving. But I know it hurts when people give you THAT look. I'm sorry. I am glad you took courage in hand and got some things you needed. Much love & Many hugs... Guest guest
kathy, i am so sorry. this situation is so disgusting. and that's exactly why i haven't, as yet, applied for medicaid, etc. here in texas. we have no children still at home, but my husband is on ssdi and i'm sure that his income would be 30.00 over the limit or something silly like that. and it just all makes me so angry. sooner or later i have to try though, since i am unable to work. i haven't applied for ssdi yet either because i still don't have a diagnosis. i don't know how you can apply when you don't know what's wrong. kathy don't give up! maybe you could try writing to every one from your councilman, mayor, state officials, etc. keep us posted. o.k. we care. lane --- kringlemom@... wrote: > i just came from my public aid laughing. they were not laughing > as loud this > time though. again i was 30 over for food stamps, but only $30 > for general > assistance. i am qualified for a medical card, but after a > spend down of > 1377/mo. but dan is eligible for a medical card until he is 19. > (go figure!!) > they say they figure you are to pay 1/2 of you income on > residential. so with > our income 1360? they say 1/2 is 780. i pay 759!! i don't get > how i am > supposed to pay my living expenss plus 1377 for medical when > that is more > than i make in a month?!?! i tried to explain to the guy 759 > plus 150 > utilities, plus 150 medicine. so i asked if he could tell me > about food > pantries, he said he could not refer me because of my income!!! > kathy in il > __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Kathi, What a no-win situation you describe. $30 over the maximum limit sure isn't much. It seems to me that people who work with folks applying for public assistance, food stamps, etc. become very hard hearted. Imagine refusing to refer you to a food pantry!! These individuals have to hope they are never in your shoes. Bet they wouldn't be so forbearing as you have been. I keep racking my brains for sage advice. It appears you are exploring all the options available to you. You have to catch a break eventually. Hang in there, Kathi. Guest guest
Judy, Crazy system, isn't it? I would bet, with the current shortage of nurses, that many offices would be glad to have the services of someone like yourself for short stints like you describe. It seems like so many government services require that participants be totally dependent. A real overhaul needs to take place, to allow disable people to be able to keep their insurance while allowing the individual to become partially independent. Maybe you could become an advocate for changing the current laws? Something to think about, Suzanne Re: [ ] public aid > Kathy, I have wanted to go back to work to but if I can't work full time I > don't get insurance and if I work part-time I lose my medicade. Guest guest
Your story is a sad one, Kathy. I'm so sorry you are experiencing such frustration and humiliation. Guest guest
It's not me, it's the Internet, Kathy! It's the least I can do. I know some of the information I sent may not seem to apply directly (like the public service link), but it may give you a name and/or address of an agency that can help. Let me know if you want me to search for anything else. I will gladly do it. Happy Mother's Day to you, too! Guest guest
thanks, it just helps to talk to people about it. you never know what you will find out. 5 doors close in your face and 3 more are about to open. someday i will find the right door. i got my fidelity check in the mail, so that has helped alot. went to walmart for a stock-up. i usually do the stores during the week. but it was nice to just go out with my son and watch his eyes when the total is double what he thought it would be. kathy in il
