Guest guest
I've searched the net, and can't find anything regarding prednisone and surgery. Does anyone know of any information anywhere? I'm caught between a rock & a hard place. My rheummy isn't sure what's going on...things have gotten worse. My left ribcage is aching. He is against me using pred except in dire circumstances. I'm so discouraged. Maybe try the pred just for a few days.

Guest guest
here are little blurbs I found that might lead you to further research.. prednisone (a steroid to reduce swelling) prior to surgery. Dr. Javer has prescribed a corticosteroid (Prednisone) and is often used together with surgery you have taken prednisone for more than a month, you may require an extra dose during physically stressful situations such as major surgery or severe infections ... If you have taken prednisone for more than a month, you may require an extra dose during physically stressful situations such as major surgery or severe infections. These " booster " doses can be given either by vein or by mouth. Usually the dose need be raised for only a day or so. This may be true even up to one year after you have discontinued the medication. This point is well known to doctors, but it is important for you to remember if you are away from your doctor and require major surgery or develop a severe infection. If you are on long term prednisone therapy, carry a notice with you on a Medic-Alert bracelet or in your wallet. (Medic-Alert Foundation can be contacted a their website at www.medicalert.org/ at their toll-free number 800-825-3785.) Be sure that all your doctors know that you are taking chronic prednisone therapy. http://www.gihealth.com/html/education/drugs/prednisone.html <http://www.imssf.org/jpred.shtml> Prednisone .... properly. If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you have received prednisone within the last twelve months. ... www.imssf.org/jpred.shtml <http://home.earthlink.net/~sbunde/experiences.html> experiences .... in November 2000. Complications. Because I was taking 60 mg of Prednisone before the surgery, I had to go on the Prednisone taper after surgery. Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to the list and don't know anything official to tell you, just my experience, which was having a total knee replacement back in December. At that time I was thinking I wouldn't be able to stay on my prednisone at the same time as surgery, but orthopedic surgeon said it was no problem and I kept taking it. Guest guest
Tess, I know every time I have a surgery (and I had 4 last year)the anesthesiologist is always concerned about predisone use........and usually my surgeon....I have diabetes(type2NID)and I take 4mg of medrol a day. When I was sick with sinusitis a couple months ago they raised me up to 32 mg a day for a few days ...my sugar immmediately went way out of whack....fortunately I got the reduce swelling immediately effect we needed right away and was able to go back to my 4 mg a day after only 3 days......and in the meanwhile increased my glucophage from 2 to 3 a day then. When you have underlying health problems aside from RA it makes it harder on us when we need meds for other immediate health problems.....I dont increase or decrease any meds w/o all my drs knowing......and whenever I go to any of them for even a sniffle I bring an updated list of meds /doses. YOur surgery isnt until June 11 right? There has to be someone in that surgeon's office (a nurse? assoc?PA? )who could help you in this matter. Also, what about a shot of steroids vs the pills? I know that a shot doesnt raise my blood sugar at all.... and sometimes works faster . I wish you luck and hope you feel better ..........Judy in AZ
Guest guest
Tess, I'm really sorry that you've been having such a rough time lately. Your many challenges would get the strongest of people down at times. You can do it though! Keep the faith. As far as your prednisone question, your surgeon is still the best one to ask. Your situation is quite complicated since you have several conditions and are on other medications. Could someone at his office help? What about a call or an email to him (from them or you)? In the meanwhile, these links discuss perioperative considerations in relation to prednisone: http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/ccjm/january2002/shaw.htm http://www.emedicine.com/med/topic3168.htm [ ] prednisone-surgery > I've searched the net, and can't find anything regarding prednisone and > surgery. Guest guest
Don't know a definitive answer just experience. I did have a minor-local sedation surgery while taking prednisone but it is one of the drugs I get questioned about when I have major surgery. I would lay it on the surgeon to find out!
