Guest guest
Hello, I have been told that I need knee replacement (not much cartilage and space between the bones) but I feel like I should wait as long as possible for several reasons. Anyway my question is does anyone (or does this even exist) know or have had injections of synthetic cartilage to cushion the bones??? I'm hoping that could be an alternative. Thanks Cecilia
Guest guest
Cecilia, I saw a show on Discovery Health Channel a few weeks ago that talked about arthritis. (I wish I could remember what it was called) They mentioned a treatment for knees where they injected a synthetic substance into the knee. Unfortunately, this was only a temp. solution (about 6 months and then it needed to be repeated). Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Guest guest
Welcome, Cecilia! Sorry that your knee is in need of a replacement. It must be very painful. Do you have RA? OA? Hyalgan (sodium hyaluronate), Supartz (sodium hyaluronate), and Synvisc (hylan G-F 20) injections are approved by the FDA for treatment of OA. These links give good descriptions of viscosupplementation (the injection of hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid) or its derivatives into the joint): http://www.hopkinsafter50.com/html/wp/2000/wp0900Feature.html http://www.pharmacy.wisc.edu/courses/718-430/2001presentation/Mollner.pdf http://arthritis.about.com/cs/synvisc/ Here is an article on a synthetic cartilage implant product, SaluCartilage, recently approved for use in Europe (but not in the US yet): http://biz./prnews/020419/atf020_1.html This CME from Medscape has a ton of information on OA of the knee - viscosupplementation and more! Registering at Medscape is well worth it. www.medscape.com/viewprogram/264 I hope you can find a solution to get you more comfortable soon. Guest guest
Hello, Thank you for this information. Yes I have RA...which was diagnosed about 5 years ago but I probably had it longer than that.
