Guest guest
Hi, I was 34 when I went thru surgical menopause and have been on an estrogen patch ever since then. I am now 47. I suffered for years with infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, severe heavy menstrual periods. I was diagnosed with RA shortly after my Dad passed away after a very slow painful condition as a complication of RA. I had documented lab tests and symptoms since I was in my late teens, but no official diagnosis until about 9 years ago at the age of 39. So I, personally, have not seen any correlation or exacerbation of symptoms since being diagnosed. Sorry, but that is my story. Maybe someone else can see similarities. Guest guest
I went through menopause EARLY... age 37. I am now 47. My first joint problems were soon after my periods started going berserk. I have always wondered if " early menopause " was in fact... " symptoms " that there was more going on. That in fact, it may have been due to autoimmune. And I wonder if the " early menopause " could have been STOPPED... would I have gone on to develop all the health problems with this now. Just my thoughts... Guest guest
Hi and welcome to our group. Hormones definitely play a role in rheumatoid arthritis, but the exact mechanism isn¹t know. Here is an article that may help explain it: http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/8.30/helthrpt/stories/s62050.htm I am going through menopause now at age 47, but so far I¹m lucky with not having any major symptoms. My period just stopped abruptly, which at first I blamed on medication. I¹ll post some more articles on this subject. Have you talked to your doctor? a On 6/9/02 9:34 PM, " LilDoc4388 " <lildoc4388@...> wrote: > hello everyone- Im a new member and have enjoyed reading the postings- > I would like to know if anyone in the group has gone through or is > going through the above noted combination- and if you know if one > accentuates or inflates the other- I feel at times like im going to > explode- and truthfully it has caused problems with my kids who dont > understand- would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom from anyone > out there or the suggestion of any reading I could do to help- > thanks!! > > >
Guest guest
Hi Group… I would surely appreciate any further documentation about this hormonal aspect….and would truly prefer an article on the role of it in regards to RA and not MS..though I understand they can be linked.. How do they definitely play a role I guess is what I am after?????????????? Thanks Re: [ ] Rheumatoid & Menopause Hi and welcome to our group. Guest guest
Because more women get autoimmune diseases than do men, some researchers have suggested that specific sex hormones -- estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, prolactin, growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 -- may govern how the immune system responds. Studies are being done and hopefully we will have answers. The levels of some hormones will vary with a woman¹s menstrual cycle. During pregnancy, some hormones increase while others decrease. For example, women with multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis enjoy a lessening of disease severity during the nine months they are pregnant. But women with systemic lupus erythematosus see their disease worsen or stay the same during pregnancy. The relationship between hormones and autoimmunity: http://www.aarda.org/hormone_art2.html I wish I could answer how hormones play a role. That is the question the scientists are looking at. a On 6/10/02 12:55 PM, " dot.com " <dot.communicator@...> wrote: > Hi Group… > > I would surely appreciate any further documentation about this hormonal > aspect….and would truly prefer an article on the role of it in regards > to RA and not MS..though I understand they can be linked.. > > How do they definitely play a role I guess is what I am > after?????????????? > Thanks > > > Re: [ ] Rheumatoid & Menopause > > Hi and welcome to our group. Guest guest
I'm 36 and I've been surgically menopausal for 6 years. I have a very understanding MD, and we have tried many different hormone approaches so I can feel " optimal " . Personally, I've noticed that with some hormone combinations I have flares (although I didn't know that was what I was having at the time as I was yet undiagnosed---I just called it joint pain). Premarin really made me hurt. I am now on compounded natural estrogen and progesterone capsules. I take .625 bi-est and 125 mg progesterone in a capsule. If I go any higher on either one, my joints flare. The estrogen is a low dose, but it is what I do best with. I also have low dose topical testosterone, but I can't decide if it helps. Too much testosterone makes me kind of mean :-). so I am not using it presently. At the advice of the compounding pharmacist, I tried 200 mg prednisone and no estrogen for a month. That's when the RA symptoms got so bad that I actually brought them up and finally got tested and diagnosed. It could be coincidence, but I think there is at least some correlation. I hope that helps, and if you have any other hormone questions, just let me know. There is a website that I used to go to that really has some good advice, and a great message board. Guest guest
I just re-read this post and I meant 200 mg progesterone, not prednisone, in the second paragraph. Sorry! <<<blush>>> Carol [ ] Rheumatoid & Menopause hello everyone- Im a new member and have enjoyed reading the postings- I would like to know if anyone in the group has gone through or is going through the above noted combination- and if you know if one accentuates or inflates the other- I feel at times like im going to explode- and truthfully it has caused problems with my kids who dont understand- would greatly appreciate any words of wisdom from anyone out there or the suggestion of any reading I could do to help- thanks!!
