Fruit Intake and Breast Cancer Risk

Keywords: BREAST CANCER - Diet, Fruit, Vegetables, Estrogen

Receptor, ER+, ER-

Reference: " Intake of fruits, and vegetables in relation to breast

cancer risk by hormone receptor status, " Lissowska J, -Closas

M, et al, Breast Cancer Res Treat, 2007 Feb 21; [Epub ahead of

print]. (Address: Department of Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention,

Cancer Center and M. Sklodowska-Curie Institute of Oncology, WK

Roentgena 5, 02-781, Warsaw, Poland. E-Mail: lissowsj@... ).

Summary: In a population-based case-control study involving 2,386

women with breast cancer and 2,503 controls, results indicate inverse

associations between total fruit intake with risk of breast cancer,

where the associations may differ by estrogen receptor (ER) status.

After adjusting for potential confounders, including age and energy

intake, subjects in the highest quartile for total fruit intake

showed a 24% reduced risk of breast cancer, compared to subjects in

the lowest quartile. Additionally, the inverse association between

total fruit intake with risk of ER+ tumors was observed to be

stronger than the inverse association between total fruit intake with

risk of ER- tumors. No inverse associations were found between

vegetable intakes with risk of breast cancer. Thus, the authors of

this study conclude, " …this study suggests that fruit intake might

have differential associations for breast tumor subtypes defined by

ER status. "
