A little fat might help you survive some exceptional events. I know a lady who's always been a bit rubenesque, but she packed on some pounds after a year working as a taxi driver. Around the age of 25 she got a particularly complicated case of appendicitis that required several surgeries and had her in and out of the hospital for about six months. She was on intravenous morphine and antibiotics and had great difficulty eating at this time. There were times that we weren't sure if she was going to win or if the infection was -- perhaps the extra pounds gave her an advantage that somebody as thin as a rail wouldn't have had.
