I too have searched the DC area for elusive purple

sweet potato. I finally found them last thanksgiving

in Merrifield at the former Han Ah Reum,

now called Super H Mart.

10780 Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA

(703) 273-0570

http://www.hmart.com/

Today I called them at 703-573-6300 about

availability, but my Korean

was not good enough to get an answer. :(

Mine were brown on the outside and bright

purple on the inside. If yours were purple on the

outside and white on the inside are probably

not the real McCoy.

Here is a picture of what to look for

Definitely purple on the inside!

Unfortunately I have not found them recently

in the H Mart. Maybe they are seasonal.

Try again around Thanksgiving. They are in

a bin next to the other potatoes and yams.

Here is a nationwide list of Korean stores

I made a pie out of my purple sweet potatoes

by using this recipe

http://kokonuggetyumyum.blogspot.com/2004/11/purple-sweet-potato-pie.html

Very yummy and VERY purple! But when

I brought it to Thanksgiving dinner, some folks were turned

off by the color. :(

According to SweetSue of the NC sweet potato

commission, there is a grower in NC

Thanks for setting me straight. So what exactly was it that I ate and

bought? Purple on the outside and white on the inside.

From this site: http://www.deliciousorganics.com/recipes/potatoes.htm

The Japanese or Oriental Sweet Potato has a beautiful pink to purple skin and is white inside. It has a delicious sweet flavor that reminds me of a chestnut. They are used to make liquor in Japan. They are attractive, colorful, and make a wonderful presentation. They can be grilled, steamed or baked. Jersey Potatoes are similar in color, flavor and texture. Grilled satsuma is called yakimo; steamed is called satsumaimo. They are used to make desserts and snacks in Japan too. Make Japanese Sweet Potato Cakes, Sugared Sweet Potatoes, or Sweet Potato Tempura.

Although the picture shown at the website above doesn’t look like the sweet potatoes I bought (the skin in the picture looks brown), a link above to a recipe site does indeed look like the ones I bought and ate:
