Bone density bears a relationship to muscle mass,

since muscle tissue is attached to the bones. The

bigger the muscles, the denser the bones will become,

in order to support them. Excess fat offers no

advantages for bone mass, and can cause undue stress

on the joints.

Hi All, The pdf of the paper is availed, but it seems apparent that it is % body fat, in which there is less % body muscle, that is examined. Naturally, less muscle corresponds to less bone strength. Also, the stress of excess weight is beneficial for bones, although certainly not for the joints. I would think that the additional 'carry' weight especially above the

hip in the overweight individuals would increase impact stresses and

strains with every step to bones of the lower extremities.

Weightbearing tends to increase bone mass, not diminish it. An

overweight person has more total mass, just moving this additional

mass, raising and lowering of the overweight arms and legs etc through

space against gravity should stimulate additional bone overall

throughout the body. Larger muscles do pull on and bend bones more

than a smaller muscle but a larger mass of any sort should also, i

would think.. puzzling

NOTE the following statement contained in this article:

" Obesity is currently thought to affect more than 64 percent of the

US's adult population and 16 percent of children. "

I certainly hope that is not true! My understanding is that about 2/3

of adults are overweight, but " only " about 1/3 are obese?
