Hi

My advice would be to call a dermatologist and make an appointment or

at the very least see your family doctor as soon as you can to

prevent further problems/breakdown for advice

Good Luck

Dear ,

I have been fighting skin breakdowns and splits in all my creases for many

years. Years ago one of my favorite doctors told me that using powder

continuously over-dries your skin and makes it flake off layers and become thin

in spots. This causes it to breakdown. I use a salve in a jar called

Lantiseptic. Walgreens carries it or will special order it for you. I have my

PAs put it on liberally after cleaning off the old each day. It has done wonders

on skin in creases that used to split when rubbed or touched. Maybe it would

work for you.

I would watch those wet wipes, too. Some contain a lot of chemicals. Pure soap

(like oatmeal) and water on a soft cloth may be better.

skin breakdown in skin fold, advice please

i have asked for advice before on how to avoid skin breakdown in the

fold of skin over my hip area and used that advice to keep that area

relatively healthy. the area gets wiped twice a day with a wet wipe,

dried with a hair dryer, sprinkled with anti fungal rice talc, then a

piece of cotton slipped in to keep skin from directly being in

constanct contact.

now it seems that is not enough as the skin is flakey with the the top

layer of skin missing in a few areas. there are also about a dozen

small orangey spots. i have spoken to a local nurse who just says to

keep it as dry and clean as i can.

i have to do this through pas so it is hard to be totally consistant,

especially as it hard for me to know if it has been dried enough.

today i got a pa to take a photo of it so i can monitor it more

carefully. are there any skin experts out there i could send the

photos to?

i am not that expert with skin as i have luckily had skin good enough

to neglect for the last 40 years! it seems worse around my monthly

period. quite scared as pa who took photo said he had never seen it

this bad before.

cheers

thanks for that pamela, i was wondering ifi was over drying it. i have

always been concerned that using cream/salve would not keep my skin dry and

previously i had been told the key was to keep it dry. yes i should check

out the wet wipes too, they are so temptingly easy! it is to sore to wipe

currently so i just have a pa line the fold with a wet wipe then remove it,

no rubbing at all!

i am in england so will look to see if there is a uk equivalent. any english

folk here with any ideas about good brands for creams/salves/wet wipes/soap?

cheers

I've had some success with calendula salve and something called Bag

Balm (not vegan - petroleum and lanolin).

Hi ,

Pamela is completely right. Certain powders and wet wipes over time

can be very bad. I realize it goes against logic.

(How would people from Louisiana know this stuff? It's 102 degrees

outside my window!)

Soft, non-drying soaps and a generous coating of 'barrier' cream or

ointment are better. If you MUST disinfect, Bactine is better than

regular antiseptics, I don't know why.

To heal, lanolin. To maintain, petrolatum. To find products with

these ingredients in your area, search the net or call a pharmacist.

Hope it's better soon.

thanks rebecca. will try water. what sort of cloth do you use? one thing i

like about wet wipes is that i know they are clean which is important on

broken skin, whereas a flannel might not be totally clean. hmmm how obvious

is it that i am clueless about skin care!?!

Knock on wood (knock, knock), but I have no skin issues that require extreme

care. For me, I just have a " Belly crack/fold " because I sit all day and all

I do is use an everyday face cloth suds up by Safeguard bar soap that is then

pat-dried.

The Safeguard is a antibacterial bar ... tried Dial's but it irritated me and

smelled a tad frillier than my Safeguard. Yes, it is the smallest soap in my

house, LOL!

Angie

I also drink milk (1 or 2 percent) so maybe it contributes to my skins

integrity. Who knows.

I'm new to the whole skin break down thing. Just got outa the

hospital for a hip break down [2nd time since November05]. The

hospitals won't take it seriously til it goes into a pussy/gangrene

crater. I'd value any advice since I'd like to prevent a sore

instead of trying to heal up a one instead.

My big question-is duaderm, tegaderm good to use?- or leave it alone

from adhesive things that could make matters worse?

And why the [bLLEEP] do the visiting nursed have to come and rip off

any dressing I put on it?

Sorry I don't really have any good advice. I have breakdown

from laying on that ear too. I tried finding some kind of

donut shaped pillow I could use to sleep with at night,

but never really succeeded. My doctor gave me a script for

a steriod cream to use on my excessively dry skin and it

seemed to help heal my ear up a bit too. Like you, the pain

depends on how much I lay on it. Is there some kind of

padding you could put on your chair where your ear ends

up resting?

Pamela, I got a jar of this stuff to try, hope its the right one. Its called

Lantiseptic Skin Protectorant?? I was surprised my local Sav-Mor drugstore had

it, they also had Bag Balm, but I didn't feel the mood to moo yet LOL. I have a

nasty crack on my side from scoliosis, doesn't bleed or anything, but very raw

and red. Like most been keeping it dry with powder!! Thanks for the info, what

an invaluable source of info this list is. Doug

Hi ,

I never had skin breaking problems but I use a cream called " Kaufmanns

Haut- und Kindercreme " for years now.

I had a look at Google but could not find out if you can purchase it in

England too. Its basis is Vaseline and it works wonders. For more than

50 years it is available in Germany now and many parents use it for

their babies.

If you would like to give it a try I offer to send it to you - no

problem. In that case please feel free to mail me at Ca-mil-la@...

Have a nice day,

Camilla

Beth,

You can go to the site to read messages anytime, old or current, by

going to the link below. That's how I always read the messages. So I

don't get tons of stuff in my email, I have my membership preferences

set to do it that way. Also, you can use the " search " by typing in key

words to find all messages about a topic...like " skin breakdown " .

Here's the link to the messages page:

Hope you find something to help your brother.

the breakdown of skin. Unfortunately, I deleted them. Now, I find my

brother Bill needs the information. He has adult onset SMA and his

head leans to the left on his shoulder most all the time. The skin is

becoming raw. Would you mind E-mailing the message again concerning

soltutions for skin breakdown. My E-mail is mbc543@...
