To All,

I finally got my new wheelchair today, the Permobil Corpus II C300.

I am having a hard time operating it because it has the big wheels in front.

It is so uncomfortable. The arm rests are too short, but my dad adjusted

them enough for me to get used to operating it.

Here is where I need help. I always need to be in a tilt position due to my

scoliosis and I feel like I'm falling forward if I don't tilt. I got the

elevated seat, but I can't be tilted and elevated. Is there any way to

reconfigure this? It is probably a safety issue, but I can't elevate my

chair while my upper body falls forward. Any ideas, anyone?

Oh, and how do I charge it? It says to connect the cable to the outlet

under the joystick. I have no cable. Is it hidden in the chair somewhere

or did the company forget to bring it? Oh, I did get a pair of safety

goggles. Somebody please explain the need for goggles for me?

The delivery guy was useless. Dropped off the chair and told me to read the

instructions or call the guy who measured me.

Can anyone help me? Especially about the tilt & elevation seat matter?

I really need help. Please.

Goodnight.

Eternal Blessings,

Meg.

Hi Meg,

I have a Permobil but maybe a little different model. I have both the

elevator and the tilt in my chair, and I _can_ tilt the chair backwards even

when I go up with the elevator. If you can't then it might be a safety issue

but I would think it can be adjusted. Ask the company that delivered it.

Regarding charging, they should have brought you a charger which has the

cable that the instructions are talking about. The plug for the charger is

located under the joystick like you said.

The goggles.... I have no idea. The only situation where anybody might need

a pair of goggles with a powered wheelchair is when you change the

batteries. But even then this is only relevant when you have wet cell

batteries and most chairs these days have dry cell batteries.

As for the armrests, if they still are not comfortable, there are several

ways of adjusting them. I can explain more if necessary. The armrests can be

changed to be longer, too, if necessary.

Hope this helps,

Taya

Meg,

Yes, I hate mine too. I am albe to tilt and elevate at the same time. Mine is

about 5 years old and I don't know if they changed the feature (like you

mentioned as a safety thing). I also don't like the big front tires. makes it

very hard to manuver. Mine has a bog-ass heavy box charger that connects down by

the front left wheel. Not sure why yours is any diferent. The only thing I use

the port under the joystick control box is when I need to tweek the settings

(like speed, sensitivity, etc.). I have to go the wheelchair place for that

though.

You'll find that big wheels in front lets you go over some bumps a bit

easier. I drive an Omegatrac now (used to use a Permobil), and would

hate to go back to rear wheel drive. Other people feel the opposite. :)

I don't know much about the new Permobils, but... if it isn't letting

you elevate while tilted, that would be a safety feature that the dealer

should be able to disable. The Permobile does automatically slow down a

lot while elevated, but that's to keep you from tipping it over. When I

had a van, I had to have the chair seat tilted back all the way (60

degrees) in order to make it through the doorway (no raised doors on

that van). Driving with the seat tilted 60 deg (especially 3 feet in the

air) is not something wheelchair manufacturers encourage. I'm too weak

to do that anymore anyway.

That said, I also have to have my seat tilted at all times to keep from

falling forward.

Chargers always come with the cable attached...

That would be for messing around with the batteries so that you don't

get battery acid in your eyes accidently... except that hardly any

chairs come with conventional liquid electrolyte lead acid batteries

anymore (certainly not a Permobil). Most likely you have gels in there,

unless they've gone to AGM batteries. Anyway, I doubt you have a real

need for the goggles -- it's more of a manufacturers' CYA item. There

just in case you need it...

That's kind of inexcuseable. Someone knowlegable should have done this,

as well as been there with a programmer to help you get the controls set

to your requirements. Also, they should have adjusted the armrests and

footrests (and I'm assuming a headrest) for you bfore they left.

Just dumping it off (unless you insisted on that, of course) doesn't cut it.

My Permobile can elevate and tilt at the same time too. I think most

new chairs need a little adjustment here and there before they are

really comfortable. I don't sign any receipt paperwork until I am happy

with the changes and I go to shop to pick it up so they can make any

adjustments I need. I don't like the idea of some delivery guy dropping

off a new new and saying here's your new chair and goodbye. Then again

I carefully choose my vendor based on their customer service

reputation. Of course, we have many choices in such a big city as

Houston. I know Meg didn't have many to choose from.

Meg, good luck with your new chair. I hope it will be very comfortable

for you!

A new chair is usually misery. Adjustments are always necessary, and

you have a learning time, , , Ideally, the chair guy should keep at it

until it's perfect for you to use, but it doesn't always happen.

Actually, mine worked for hours and still it wasn't right. Eventually

we had to replace the joystick, back, armrest, and headrest and add a

switch button. He was patient and cooperative, but I had to tell him

what was wrong and we had to experiment with solutions. Additionally

my brother took the hardware apart and put it together to fit me! It

takes work.

The fact that your dealer didn't even try is just wrong. You have a

length of time in which you can return any merchandise. Find the

legalities for your state, don't make empty threats, but you don't

have to be stuck for years with a bad chair. I know one person who

changed chairs twice! Notify them, CALMLY, first by phone and follow

up in writing, that the chair is not doing what it is supposed to.

Maybe that will remind them you don't have to accept this, and they

will be out their thousands $ profit.

The key is 1- being aware of your needs and 2-calm, clear communication.
