I vote for “leave it alone”. If you search “iron” in our archives, you will see that we have previously discussed the dangers of excess iron. Assuming you are pre- menopausal, this is extremely common in women and nothing to get excited about. I remember my doc making me take iron pills way back when. It didn’t help anyway. I was always slightly anemic.

If you are in good health, and feel good, it ain’t broke. So don’t fix it.

Congratulations on your successful path to better health.

Subject: [ ] excellent blood lab results

For the past 5 months I've been implementing CRON by following a

19/5 intermittent fasting plan, lost 13 pounds, and I'm 49 years

old. BMI is now 23.1. (Intermittent fasting is the easiest way for

me to do CRON.) Just got back my latest blood labs, and I'm very

happy to see numbers showing such low risk for cardiovascular

disease, diabetes and other problems. However, I'm curious about the

low serum iron and would like to know if anyone has suggestions

about that. (It's fine the way it is, or eat more meat, or take iron

supplements... I eat red meat maybe once a month and also eat a lot

of dark leafy greens and other plant foods typically thought to be

high in iron. And my multivitamin has 18 mgs, though I haven't been

taking those for all that long.) Thanks.

Fasting blood glucose 80

Total cholesterol 169

Good cholesterol 79

Bad cholesterol 82

Triglycerides 41

VLDL very low density lipoproteins 8

CRP .53

Blood count fine

Kidney and liver functions fine

Serum iron LOW at 27 (normal range 35 ˆ 155) but no sign of anemia

Resting heart rate 60

Blood pressure 115/80

Hi :

I don't have an opinion. But you might in part base your decision on

whether you have any of the symptoms normally associated with iron

deficiency.

They are:

" Symptoms of iron deficiency

Most of the symptoms of iron deficiency are a result of the

associated anemia, and may include fatigue, rapid heart rate,

palpitations, and rapid breathing on exertion. Iron deficiency

impairs athletic performance and physical work capacity .......

ability to maintain a normal body temperature on exposure to cold is

also impaired in iron-deficient individuals. Severe iron deficiency

anemia may result in brittle and spoon-shaped nails, sores at the

corners of the mouth, taste bud atrophy, and a sore tongue. "

Rodney -- Well, I sure don't have any symptoms of iron deficiency. I

appreciate the reassurance, and will follow Francesca's advice the

leave it alone. Thanks. --
