Hi..

I live in Utah which is 4800 ft elevation so I have to wear oxygen. I just

went to the Caribbean and my sats were 98 with no oxygen. So I am moving to

California ASAP because it is sea level and I'm going to attend the art

institute. Does anyone know about the benefits in Southern California?

Thanks,

The benefits are great as long as you don't get married! ha, ok I'm a bit

cynical!

Will you not have to wear oxygen if you move here? Pardon my ignorance...

I do love south cali though, great weather and accessibility. Cost of living

can be high though. Which art inst. are you planning to go to? What city do you

want to live in? Are you moving with friends? Do you need to hire pcas? You

should be able to get the max for federal plus Cali gives a bit too-Alana is the

pro on the details.

How was your trip to the Caribbean??

Hi ,

Please be sure to print this out as I've already given you most of

this information a couple of times.

SSI in California on January 1, 2008 is $868/mo. for individuals and

$1,521 per month for couples, and on June 1, 2008 it will be raised

to $888/mo. for individuals and $1,558 per month for couples.

In California, SSI automatically established Medicaid eligibility.

It's called Medi-Cal. All that's required is to change your address

with the Social Security Administration as soon as you have an

address here.

To get home care through the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS)

program, you must be eligible for Medi-Cal through the county social

services department. The maximum number of IHSS hours one can

receive per month is 283 (about 9 hrs./day). Each county has a

different hourly rate of pay. Some counties provide home care

workers with health, vision, and/or dental benefits.

By law, an intake for IHSS must be done within 45 days, but some

counties are processing them much slower, despite a court order,

because they just don't have enough case workers. I live in Alameda

County and there's a six-month wait (one of the worst counties -

though, workers here make more and get benefits). Most counties take

six weeks to 3 months. It's wise to have a trust fund, someone who's

willing/able to wait to be paid, and/or someone else paying for your

care while you're waiting for IHSS. Your own savings cannot be more

than $2,000 ($3,000 for a couple) or you'll be ineligible for SSI and

Medi-Cal.

People who have higher medical needs can apply for a Waiver through

California's Medi-Cal In-Home Operations (IHO) department. Depending

on medical need, people can get up to 24 hrs/day care between IHSS

and IHO.

Housing subsidies are available through local City and County Housing

Authorities. Most of the waiting lists are long and/or closed.

Subsidies are also available in 202 and 811 housing projects.

Contact a housing advocate in the community where you want to live to

get a list of these buildings so you can try to get on multiple

waiting lists. Some colleges have good disabled students programs

who can advise you about this. Some schools have housing but often

require that you leave during breaks and over the summer.

All transit districts have Paratransit services. Paratransit is only

as good as the bus/subway system with which it's affiliated.

All of the above information can be found on the web for whichever

counties you're considering. IHO information is at the state Medi-

Cal web site. You might also get help from the local independent

living centers (ILCs). There's a national ILC directory at

www.ilru.org. I hope this is helpful.
