Greetings,

Al posted 2 studies the other day on low carbohydrate,

high protein diets and the resutling increased

mortality from them, and they seemed to go by without

anyone making any comments.

http://www.nature.com/ejcn/journal/v61/n5/full/1602557a.html

I was reading through them. In one of them, the

average protein intake was 76 grams of protein a day.

Increasing protein 15 grams to just 91 grams a day

(and cutting back on carbohydrate) resulted in a 22%

increase in mortality during the 10 year period.

Maybe not a good philosophy.

Today I saw a patient I have been with for a year.

Female, 45, 122 lbs. 5'2 " . A BMI of 22.3

Her weight today was 108, BMI 19.8

Her numbers one year ago vs today

Fasting Glucose 84, now 77

Total Cholesterol 204, now 174

Triglycerides 86, now 74

LDL 111, now 88

HDL 81, now 71

Ratio 2.5, now 2.45

total non HDL chol 123, now is 103

Was on a " healthy " American diet, like a " zone " diet.

Now is on a pritikin style CRON diet that is 15-20%

fat, 15-20% Protein, and 60-70% carb. I had her cut

her fat down, cut out added fats and oils, eat more

natural unrefined unprocessed nutrient dense plant

foods (high in carb), ensure omega 3 is adeuqate and

limit the animal protein and dairy.

We werent trying to have her lose much weight, but she

has been working out more than usual so dropped 12 lbs

this year. I didnt recommend she lose any more weight.

Would you say she is healthier today?

I think so.

Regards

Jeff
