I don't know about most of others that are married and have SMA... But

as for myself, Of course I am on SSDI...and That is not a great amount

of money....In South Carolina if I was SINGLE and was making under

approximately 16,000.00 per year; I would have no problems qualifying

for assisstance...

BUT I AM MARRIED... and I am not about to start lying about my status to

get help... Since I am MARRIED....the couple can only make about

20,000.00 a year to qualify for assistance....Since we make just over

22,000.00 annually we do not qualify...Period..

I talked to Senator Ray Cleary of town County, South Carolina who

listened to my story and realized that there is definitely a Inequality

of Status of Married Folks and Single People...Equality should be across

the board...

I remember a number of years ago when THE I.R.S. did AWAY with the

Marriage Penalty... Do you guys remember this... Single people, even

those who lived together were allowed to file for taxes separately and

get a larger deduction... There was an Inequality in THE LAW of the

Federal Government that had to be changed, so that those who were

MARRIED were given the same amount of equal deductions as the single

person..

Now back to Medicaid in South Carolina... I am not sure if We Need to go

as a group to the Government " Federal " to get an amendment, stating that

Married Handicapped people being allowed the same and Equal Allowances

to allow them to qualify for services as a Single Person.., or do we

need to do this on the state level..

My thought on this is this: Single people are in this South Carolina I

live in must make under 16,000 to qualify for full Medicaid Services...

To ME, Married Couples and in my case we both are disabled, me only more

physically visable.... to have Married Couples be allowed to make

32,000.00 annually to qualify for Full Medicaid Services....

Where would you like to start... You can email my senator, who is Ray

Cleary at Clearyr@... <mailto:Clearyr@...> and start

inundating his e-mail box till he takes this to Hugh Leatherman the

Finance Director for South Carolina Department of Health and Human

Services or you can call Senator Cleary at 843-357-2234 and voice your

sentiments on this injustice.

He told me earlier this evening around 7pm eastern standard time that it

could take 2 YEARS to get this changed... This will not Do... I may not

even be alive in 2 years after nearly 14 years with Adult Onset

SMA....you may e-mail me at bartonjackson47@...

<mailto:bartonjackson47@...> , with your suggestions or leave a

note on the Post that I wrote at nearly 4:55am lol... pain issues...or

get in touch with the Families of SMA and see what they think a good

direction would be to progress... The sooner the better! 2 years is

absurd! They can do it a whole lot quicker like changing a flat tire if

they wanted to or if it was their family member... The last sentence is

my opinion...Sincerely Barton
