Guest guest
Oh, gosh, Doug. Too much! I'm sorry. Make sure she doesn't have an infection. C. diff (clostridium difficile) causes horrible diarrhea and is becoming more prevalent. > > To those of you with PEG tubes....my Mother recently had one put in and is having a awful time with severe diarrhea and cramps, she also cannot " hold " it. For formulas they've tried Hn, Iso Source, and were trying Ensure Plus. It was a little better for a day, but she's back to the runs. Any help, advice, tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated, Doug > >
Guest guest
That's exactly what I was thinking... C. Diff is NASTY stuff. If she's having cramping, fever (even lowgrade), or bloody stools she probably needs to be seen immediately. If it's a PEG it's just going into the stomach, so it *shouldn't* be dumping. The thing I'd wonder about is if she may have developed a problem with the valve from her stomach to her intestines staying open too much. All other things ruled out, you might try more fiber. I know it sounds odd, but adding benefiber to h's feeds really helped with her irritable bowel symptoms. She also takes culturelle (probiotics) to aide in maintaining her intestinal flora balance. Hope your Mom feels better very soon!!!!! Love and Hugs Jeni Re: PEG Users Oh, gosh, Doug. Too much! I'm sorry. Make sure she doesn't have an infection. Guest guest
Doug* I had the same problem, Benefiber worked! Re: PEG Users Oh, gosh, Doug. Too much! I'm sorry. Guest guest
I prefer syringe feedings. It's painless, takes 5 minutes to do, and I can go out (to work, shopping, hiking, etc.) without that ugly pump hanging on my chair. By the way, I take in one can of regular Ensure with 3 scoops of ProSource (protein powder) twice a day (at 8 a.m & 8 p.m.), one yogurt smoothie at lunch, and 2 bottles of water throughout the day. In the morning, I take liquid Centruim & potassium chloride. And at night, I take the potassium again and flax seed oil. The only two " meds " that I take and crush to put in my tube are Lasix (for water retention) and Zyrtec (for allergies). I must admit that this diet REALLY works and gives me tons of energy. I go days without putting food in my mouth......and when I do, it's either soup or ice cream....or beer! ;-) Vicki **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Guest guest
How much Benefiber per feeding? What setting on the pump? A teaspoon per bag perhaps? Its the weekend and no doctors to call, we're at our wits end? Dad took her off the Ensure Plus last night, every 2 hours all night long was wearing them both out, they're in their middle 70's for goodness sake. Til we hear from the docs or visiting nurse, we been giving her Boost alternating with yogurt smoothies (thought some good bacteria might help?). She finally stopped pooping, she was going every 1-2 hours, so I assume she was getting no nutrition whatsoever. Thanks so much, I appreciate everything. Doug (oh, what are your thoughts regarding pump feedings vs. syringe feeding?)
Guest guest
I mix h's benefiber in with her total daily feeds, but I do follow the typical adult daily dose that is listed on the container. I also much prefer the slower rate using a pump and longer feeds. h is on her pump from the time she gets up until *about* 14 hours later depending on the day and amount of extra water I add in. She never did handle any kind of bolus feeds well and couldn't take as little as a 150cc bolus over 15 minutes. She can handle a rate of about 150cc/hour just fine though. This way I get more total volume into her, too. At this time of year when we're having 98 degree days that is so important! Love and Hugs Jeni Re: PEG Users How much Benefiber per feeding? Guest guest
Hey Alana, forgot to tell you regarding an older post of mine. You were dead right regarding my Mother , she got C. Guest guest
Wow. Damn. I'm glad you figured it out and hope she's feeling better. The more we depend on antibiotics, the more we're vulnerable to c.diff. > > > > Hey Alana, forgot to tell you regarding an older post of mine. You were dead right regarding my Mother , she got C.
