Why would one need anesthesia for a trach change? I never had it. The stoma

heals from original placement in 4-6 weeks. Then you have a hole....like a

nostril. Changing the entire trach is not painful and takes 10 seconds

max....even

when hooked on a vent. I do not understand.

From what I've learned, skin growths rarely occur if both inner & outer

canulas are removed for cleaning on a frequent basis. It does not give time for

tissue to develop. But heck, what do I know? I only worked at D.R.I. for 8 years

with both T.B.I. & high level quads. I just don't want folks terrified of

having their trachs changed.

Not everyone is the same. There are a number of reasons there could be problems.

For example, over time some people have skin growths that cause obstructions in

the airway.
