Guest guest
I would like to know how many of you live in Florida? I would like to move there because the weather is healthier for me but I have heard that they have virtually no pca program to speak of. Guest guest
Really? I heard Disneyworld and all that was more accessible than it is here in California! It's horrible here except for the weather. I hate to talk you out of your decision, so let others answer first. But really, if you're disabled, there's virtually nothing here for you. SSI benefits (if you're lucky enough to be approved... I have a severely disabled friend whose application was denied three times before finally being accepted) are minimal, there are no PCA programs, and it's pretty hard to get through to state departments (i.e. Dept. of Children and Families). While the temperature is usually nice, Florida is really quite humid, and hurricane season can be a great bother. Additionally, while the state is wheelchair-friendly, good luck finding a way to get around, especially if you live in the Orlando area (where I live). Orlando is way behind all the other big cities in the U.S. in that we have no mass transit system. Just the public bus, which can take forever to get to from point A from point B. There is a paratransit service, but I have heard terrible things about it, such as it showing up an hour late or perhaps not showing up at all! Unless you can drive, or have somebody to drive you, it's a chore to get around. I visited San Diego in 2006 and was amazed by their affordable, disabled-friendly light-rail. I was able to travel throughout the city with no assistance - it was so easy. I've never had that luxury in Orlando. It may seem nice from the outside, but living in Florida can be a nightmare for the disabled individual. If I had the opportunity, I would move elsewhere (perhaps northern California or Portland) in a heartbeat. I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but I don't want you to move here and find yourself disappointed.
