Guest guest
Why does having kids mean you are going to wait? Have you tried ways of blending or pureeing food so that it is either drinkable with a straw even, or easily swallowed like mash or pudding? I would totally be unable to eat if it weren¹t for my heavy duty blender. Vitamix.com or blendtec.com before I found ways to process the food I was so thin I was pretty much emaciated now I am so much healthier for getting proper nutrition, I just think that because you have kids you should be really good about eating/nutrition to keep you healthy and strong! :-) Love, N On 12/25/08 11:46 PM, " Amy " <blueyedaze@...> wrote: > > > > can any tell me the difference between them, and pros/cons of each? > i'm gonna need one within 5 years, i'd assume, i'm so stressed about > how much i'm not eating, so sick of constantly being hungry, and > downright hate that i've lost almost all ability to feed myself. if i > didn't have kids, i'd get it done immediately. > > amy > >
Guest guest
Because I need Will at the hospital, and we're the only ones who can stay with them. We have no help with the kids, which is fine because they're our kids, but I'd sorta like to be alive to parent them? I pretty much live off of mashed potatoes, soup, overcooked pasta, and hot chocolate. Will said he'd try harder to make me more crockpot meals, which I can eat with relative ease. I'm just really taking this not being able to feed myself very hard. On Dec 26, 2008, at 1:29 AM, wrote: > Why does having kids mean you are going to wait? Guest guest
I am experiencing the same thing. My right wrist (my " good " hand) is suddenly very weak even with all the positioning we do. Maybe it's the lack of a good sleep or my poor nutrition or both. Or maybe it's the effect of all the antihistamines I am taking to help with the aspiration situation. Don't know, don't know. I think I will be drinking more Ensure. At the hospital I work at, g-tube placement is an out-patient procedure (even for ALS patients). Maybe you can do that. Guest guest
Sucks, doesn't it? Will has been overly sensitive, trying to help me all he can... I just feel so damn useless. I can drive my chair and use my ipod- I know it could be worse, but it's all a combination of not being able to go out alone, this shitty weather with 4 " snowbanks, turning 30 soon. Ugh. I'll work through it, I always do. I will look into that. Calling Monday. thanks, L. =) On Dec 26, 2008, at 7:48 PM, Lori G wrote: > I am experiencing the same thing. Guest guest
A G-tube can be placed in Intervention Radiology under a local anesthetic with light ( " twilight " ) sedation and go home the same day. Don't let anyone tell you it HAS to be placed using a general. That is NOT true. Shop around till you find a doc who will do it that way. Those of us coming up through the ranks now (moms & dads of older kids) can tell you that the nutrition is a HUGE component to managing strength issues with SMA. And following an amino acid diet has made a tremendous difference in our childrens' health & strength. Maybe the attached articles will help explain. One of the key components of the AA diet is that dairy & meat products require a great deal of energy expenditure from a person with SMA to breakdown and utilize. Proteins in the form of medium (or simple) branch-chained amino acids are the easiest for an SMA person to breakdown. Products like Ensure which are milk-based are much more difficult to break down and are not " ideal " proteins for someone with SMA. The AA diet has kinda become " my thing " so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!! Guest guest
I've been getting a lot weaker lately too, I changed my diet to vegan, raw/living food and it definitely helps but I am still weaker. It wouldn't surprise me though if the antihistamines are a contributing factor they make it really hard for me to hold up my head. Guest guest
Hey Amy, I understand your frustration with suddenly losing your ability to feed yourself - I lost a lot of my mobility after a lengthy hospital stay few years ago. Have you tried drinking Boost or Ensure? I drink one every night before bed to help with my weight. Sometimes I even chug one or two in place of a meal if I'm crunched for time. This can get pricey though, so I'd recommend getting a prescription if you go with that route. I also drink a lot of Naked or Bolthouse Farms, organic, highly concentrated fruit smoothies, which pack a lot of calories and vitamins. They are also pretty filling and taste awesome. Hang in there, you're not alone! It seems like all I can handle these days are my mouse and joystick. I'm considering trying out that amino acid diet in attempts to maintain what I do still have. Guest guest
Danny uses a 40 oz mix of Juicy Juice Strawberry Kiwi and Sunny D original flavor juice with 2 packets of tolerex which supplies 5 drinks over a 2-day period. The key for him is for it to be really cold, and he quickly follows each large sip with a bite of food. Danny's always been a pretty picky eater, so if the taste of the tolerex mix isn't too much for him, then anyone should be able to get it down with no problem. If any of you do try the Amino Acid Diet/Tolerex, be sure that you don't go by the packet directions for making it. It should be diluted much more than the instructions say. Read the articles that were posted by Suzanne or get more info from others who use it. The only drawback is that the extra liquid intake means more frequent urination, so he sometimes skips it if he'll be away from me for a long stretch. If he skips drinking it for a day or two (if we are out of town or on the road), he definitely feels a difference. I can't say enough about how much it has helped Danny. You can really see the difference between his pics in the photo section from 2003 and 2004 to photos from this year...he is much healthier now. > > > Hey Amy, > > > > I understand your frustration with suddenly losing your ability to > > feed yourself - I lost a lot of my mobility after a lengthy hospital > > stay few years ago. Guest guest
Amy, I personally prefer the low profile Mic-key button. You can detach the long extension tube which gives you the ability to clean it out, while with the peg tube you can't. It also allows for less tugging when being moved etc. I know many adult hospitals do not carry these b/c it's a ped thing (I dunno why), but they can order them. Hopefully the IR doc is familiar with them. I love my tube. Without it I'd waste away to nothing b/c I have such a horrible appetite. I also do not have to swallow pills or drink nasty meds. Guest guest
I can only tell you about what ne has, which is a " button " --- Mic-Key<http://www.mic-key.com/>. It is literally a button that sits flush with her skin, sticking up only about <1/4 " . When she swims in her 1 piece suit, you cannot see the button. It has a " tail " that is removable, an is used only when actually hooked to the feeding pump. With the tail detached, there is nothing to get accidentally pulled. I change ne's button at home, and from the time I open the kit, wash my hands, remove the old button and replace the new, it takes 15 minutes --- tops. We usually change it every 4-6 weeks. ne is at an age where kids are very concerned about being or looking different. Because she is fed on a continuous basis during the day (what works best for her), her pump hangs in a backpack on the back of her wheelchair and the tube snakes down her shirt, around her waist and through the back of her wheelchair. It is not noticeable. ne will tell you that she NEVER wants her g-tube/button removed. She knows how much better she feels with it, and even if it does make her different, she wants to keep it. Some folks use the feeding pump only at night. Others " bolus " -- feed at specific times during the day. I like the fact that by feeding ne at a steady rate throughout the day, I keep her blood sugar stable. ne doesn't eat breakfast before school -- never has. So the feeds start shortly after she gets up, and runs throughout the day. She usually eats a light lunch at school, and dinner at home. We shut the pump off at times during the day, especially around meals, or when she feels full. It is off at bedtime. Suzanne Jesus said, ' " I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help Me. Guest guest
Yes, it can, and it should be for an SMA patient. (Avoid a General if at all possible.) Guest guest
Thank you so much! Both my c-sections were done under general, and while all went well, I'd like to another awake intubation at all costs. Guest guest
, The peg tube is the type of tube that reminds me of a garden hose. There is always a tube hanging from your stomach. The Mic-key button is more flush with the skin, and you can disconnect the tube that hangs from your stomach when not accessing the tube. It's more inconspicuous. Guest guest
I know, sorry i make a mistake. I ment I highly recomment the button tube. Kemp From: Ksmile96@... <Ksmile96@...> Subject: Re: gtube vs. peg Date: Monday, December 29, 2008, 3:29 PM , The peg tube is the type of tube that reminds me of a garden hose. There is always a tube hanging from your stomach. The Mic-key button is more flush with the skin, and you can disconnect the tube that hangs from your stomach when not accessing the tube. It's more inconspicuous. Kimi }i{ Visit my myspace page and blogs: _www.myspace. com/ksmile96_ (http://www.myspace. com/ksmile96) }i{ " When you're gone, the pieces of my heart are missing you.
